What Happened?
Walmart (WMT) asked its 2.1 million associates how they feel about AI, the first time the company had done this. The survey ran in June and drew more than 1.7 million responses.
The results were upbeat. Among office-based associates, 77% said they are excited about AI’s potential to improve their work. Among U.S. frontline associates, 84% said they feel confident using digital tools.
Chief People Officer Maren Waggoner shared the findings at the CNBC Workforce Executive Council Summit.
She said training makes the difference. In her words, “Providing the tools, providing the training; they feel more confident.”
Walmart has partnered with Google and OpenAI on free AI training in the past 13 months. Associates who took the OpenAI training reported a 27% confidence gain.
That stands out against the national mood. A Pew Research Center poll from August 2026 found 52% of U.S. adults are more concerned than excited about AI.

Waggoner also addressed job fears. She said automation in fulfillment centers is meant to cut friction and keep the focus on human judgment.
At Walmart’s Dallas innovation lab, automation created more quality assurance roles instead of broad job losses.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Walmart Stock
This news is about workforce confidence, not earnings. Still, it fits the story behind Walmart stock. On the Q2 call, CEO John Furner described a “people-led, tech-powered” strategy, and AI is part of it.
AI is also showing up with customers. Use of the Sparky shopping assistant is up 70% from last year, and shoppers who use Sparky spend 40% more per order.
The business is performing too. Sales grew 5% in constant currency last quarter, global e-commerce rose 23%, and adjusted EPS grew over 19%.
Management raised its full-year EPS guidance to $2.80 to $2.87.
Walmart’s Mexico unit missed Q3 profit estimates; net profit fell 6%, and revenue came in below forecasts.
Rising costs weighed on margins, though online sales in Mexico grew 15% and management also warned that Q3 growth will be slower.

Overall, a confident, trained workforce supports Walmart’s push into faster delivery and digital tools.
Walmart stock still depends on how well those efforts turn into sales and profit.
