What Happened?

Amazon (AMZN) confirmed on Friday that it is shuffling leadership in its Alexa division. Reuters reported the news, coming a day after Amazon announced its first Alexa-powered tablets.

Daniel Rausch is stepping away from Alexa and Echo next month. He has been a vice president there for over three years and has worked at Amazon for 17 years.

He has been Alexa’s face at events and launches. Amazon says he will return in 2027 in another role in the devices and services division.

Aidan Marcuss will take over, who currently runs Fire TV, advertising, and the Amazon Appstore. He joined the e-commerce giant from Microsoft in early 2025.

Marcuss oversaw a new Fire TV stick last month, which got mixed reviews.

Kevin Keith, a vice president of product and marketing, will keep his job. For now, he will also take on Marcuss’ current duties.

The new tablets use Alexa+, the latest version of the assistant. It is built on generative AI and can handle longer prompts.

Amazon priced the tablets as high-end, while past Fire tablets were cheap. Alexa+ comes with the $139-per-year Prime membership. It costs $20 a month on its own.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Amazon Stock

A leadership change in one unit does not move the company’s core numbers.

Still, Alexa has lost money since it launched in 2014. So any shake-up there gets attention.

The bigger drivers of Amazon’s stock are elsewhere. In Q2, revenue rose 20% to $200.6 billion and operating income rose 43% to $27.5 billion. AWS grew 36.7%, its fastest pace in 18 quarters.

Management also sees Alexa as a growth tool. On the Q2 call, Amazon said customers who tried Alexa+ sign up for Prime at nearly 25% higher rates.

Alexa+ also expanded to Germany, Austria, France and Brazil.

Amazon expects to spend about $220 billion on capital projects in 2026, up from $200 billion. It forecasts Q3 operating income between $22.5 billion and $26.5 billion.
