What Happened?

Travelers Companies (TRV) stock climbed after the insurer posted a Q2 that blew past expectations across nearly every measure.

Revenue came in at $12.15 billion, and net income hit $2.21 billion. Diluted earnings per share jumped to $10.26, up sharply from $6.53 in the same quarter last year.

The strength came from disciplined underwriting, the core of how Travelers makes money.

The company’s combined ratio, a key measure of insurance profitability where lower is better, improved to 83.6%. Its underlying combined ratio, which strips out one-time items, came in at 84.1%. Both numbers reflect strong pricing discipline and lower-than-expected losses across the business.

All three of Travelers’ business segments performed well. Business Insurance grew net written premiums to a record $6 billion, up 5% after adjusting for the sale of its Canadian operations. New business in that segment hit a record $805 million.

Bond & Specialty Insurance grew net written premiums 14% to a record $1.2 billion, with its Surety business posting a striking 40% jump, helped by large projects and increased demand tied to data center construction.

Personal Insurance also delivered strong results, with net written premiums reaching $4.3 billion and a combined ratio of just 79.5%.

Investment income added to the strong quarter too. After-tax net investment income rose 14% to $883 million, boosted by a growing fixed income portfolio and solid returns from alternative investments.

Travelers also benefited from $456 million in favorable prior-year reserve development, meaning past claim estimates turned out better than originally expected.

That marks the 19th time in the last 20 years the company has seen this kind of favorable development, which speaks to how conservatively Travelers sets its reserves in the first place.

TRV Stock Q2 Earnings vs. Estimates in Billion USD (TIKR)

On top of the earnings beat, Travelers kept returning cash to shareholders. The company paid a $1.25 quarterly dividend and repurchased $1.3 billion of its own stock during the quarter, part of more than $1.5 billion in total capital returned.

Travelers also filed a multi-billion-dollar shelf registration to support an employee stock ownership plan. Management credited part of the improvement to ongoing investments in technology and AI, particularly in claims processing, which they said is starting to show up in better loss ratios.

CEO Alan Schnitzer emphasized the company isn’t interested in cutting prices just to chase growth, calling that approach a “fool’s errand” that only lowers margins without building real value.
