What Happened?

American Airlines (AAL) stock is under the microscope this week as investors weigh a strange puzzle: the airline flies more than anyone else, yet it earns far less than its two biggest rivals.

American runs about 6,500 flights a day, more than United, but United still pocketed roughly $3 billion more profit last year. Delta beat American by close to $5 billion.

CEO Robert Isom told CNBC the company wants to “be best at everything that we do,” and he pointed to a long-range plan to close that margin gap, though he didn’t give a firm timeline.

The company is leaning on bigger, fancier airport lounges, new wide-body jets, and refreshed cabins on long-haul planes to attract higher-paying travelers, using the same playbook Delta and United started years earlier.

On the earnings side,

  • American’s Q1 adjusted loss was $0.40 per share, even though revenue grew 10.8% year over year.
  • Winter storms and a jump in fuel costs ate into results.
  • Management now expects Q2 revenue growth of 13.5% to 16.5% and full-year adjusted earnings around $0.35 per share, roughly flat versus last year despite a $4 billion increase in fuel expense.

Debt remains a drag too. American ended the quarter with $34.7 billion in total debt, its lowest level since 2015, but still a heavy load compared to peers.

One pilot union spokesman summed up the airline’s position bluntly, calling American “a giant, with a limp.”

What the Market Is Telling Us About American Airlines Stock

Wall Street isn’t giving up on American Airlines stock.

  • Analysts expect adjusted earnings to jump almost 80% this year and then roughly quadruple again by 2027, a sign that investors believe the turnaround plan can actually work.
  • But the market is also watching execution closely.
  • American ranked just sixth of 11 U.S. airlines in on-time performance during the first half of the year, well behind Delta and United, which took the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

The bigger question hanging over American Airlines stock is whether premium investments like new lounges, wide-body orders, and upgraded cabins can actually shift customer habits fast enough.

Rivals have had a decade-long head start selling higher-margin seats.

Until American Airlines stock shows the revenue gap actually narrowing, not just flight volume growing, investors may continue to treat the stock as a show-me story rather than a done deal.
