What Happened?
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) stock climbed on Friday, outperforming the broader market as investors moved money into defensive stocks during a selloff in tech and semiconductor names.
When markets get shaky, investors often look for companies with steady, diversified businesses, and Berkshire fits that description well with its mix of insurance, energy, railroad, and industrial holdings.
There’s another factor lifting Berkshire Hathaway stock right now: growing belief that the company ramped up share buybacks last quarter.
Barron’s estimated Berkshire may have repurchased between $5 billion and $11 billion of its own stock in Q2. That estimate is based on details from Warren Buffett’s securities filing tied to his annual charitable donations.
When a company buys back a large chunk of its own shares, it typically signals management confidence and can support the stock price by reducing the number of shares outstanding.
Speaking of that filing, it came with a notable change this year. Buffett left the Gates Foundation off his list of annual charitable stock gifts for the first time since 2006.
Instead, all of this year’s donations went to four family-linked foundations: 9 million Class B shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, and 1 million shares each to the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation.
Buffett said his goal is to give away all of his Berkshire shares within about eight years, with his children carrying out the remaining distribution by the end of 2034.

The Gates Foundation had been the largest recipient of Buffett’s Berkshire donations for two decades, receiving more than $47 billion in shares since 2006.
Buffett had made what he called an “irrevocable” commitment back then to donate annually throughout his lifetime, as long as Bill or Melinda Gates remained actively involved with the foundation.
This year’s exclusion follows reports that Buffett paused his usual donation while a review into the foundation’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein plays out.
Buffett has said he hasn’t spoken with Gates since the matter became public, though he described their history together as good times shared.
The Gates Foundation responded by thanking Buffett for his decades of support and noted it remains financially strong going forward.
