Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) beat Wall Street’s third-quarter estimates on Wednesday, October 21, and the stock barely moved. Shares were up about 1% at roughly $695 in afternoon trading. Adjusted EPS of $6.68 topped the $6.40 consensus, and revenue rose 9% to $12.14 billion with 6% organic growth, according to the company’s third-quarter release.

The flat reaction makes sense once you take the beat apart. About $0.15 of that EPS came from one-time tariff refunds, so more than half of the $0.28 beat won’t come back next quarter.

Where Thermo Fisher’s Beat Came From

On the earnings call, CFO Jim Meyer split the $0.26 of EPS upside against the company’s own guidance into three pieces: $0.08 from operations, $0.03 from currency, and $0.15 from tariff refunds that were never in the guidance. The refunds added about $60 million of adjusted operating income, or 50 basis points of margin.

Strip them out and the quarter shrinks:

  • Adjusted EPS of about $6.53, a $0.13 beat (2%) instead of $0.28 (4.4%)
  • EPS growth of about 13% instead of the headline 15%
  • Margin expansion of about 70 basis points instead of 120 (adjusted operating margin was 24.5%, up from 23.3%)

The growth beat holds up better. Organic revenue ran about 2 points ahead of guidance, led by 10% organic growth in Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services. Management said part of that was Pharma Services work landing in the third quarter instead of the fourth, which is why fourth-quarter organic guidance stays at 4%.

The Raise Is Smaller Than It Looks

Thermo Fisher lifted its 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $25.13 to $25.43. The midpoint moved up $0.15 to $25.28, and $0.05 of that is tariff money left over after about $40 million of extra fourth-quarter spending. Operations added $0.09. Full-year organic growth guidance rose to 4%.

Cash is the clean part of the report. Free cash flow reached $4.6 billion through September, up 39% from $3.3 billion a year earlier, and the full-year target rose to $7.0 billion to $7.5 billion.

TMO Stock Has Already Priced the Recovery

At 26.15x forward earnings, Thermo Fisher trades above its five-year average of 23.64x and far from its 17.12x low. In May, with the stock near $473, it traded at about 18.6x.

Analysts have chased the price up. The mean price target climbed from about $591 in July to $690.62, which is level with the stock.

A June model run put fair value near $725 by the end of 2030. That’s only about 4% above today’s price, with four years still to go. The market has paid for the recovery in advance, and a 2% underlying beat gives it little reason to pay more.

The Date Thermo Fisher Holders Should Circle

February 2 is the next real test, when Thermo Fisher reports its fourth quarter and gives 2027 guidance. CEO Marc Casper has framed organic growth moving through a 3% to 6% range on the way back to 7%, which he called a normal year, sometime around late 2027 or early 2028.

At 26x forward earnings, the stock needs the top half of that range. A 2027 organic guide of 5% or better supports today’s multiple. One at 4%, matching this year’s organic revenue growth outlook, leaves TMO priced for growth that hasn’t shown up yet.
