What Happened?

SpaceX stock (SPCX) closed the week lower, slipping below its $135 IPO price even after a Friday bounce. .The pressure came from a fresh share unlock.

On Thursday, about 319 million shares held by early employees and investors became tradable. That’s part of a staggered lockup schedule set to release roughly 88% of SpaceX’s 13 billion total shares through 2027.

More supply is on the way: a 1.3 billion-share tranche unlocks around SpaceX’s Q3 earnings in early November, followed by another release tied to the 180-day expiry in December.

CEO Elon Musk’s 6.42 billion shares remain locked until June 2027.

Interestingly, SpaceX stock handled a much bigger unlock just a few weeks ago without trouble. On August 6, up to 911.5 million shares became tradable, and the stock actually rose 6% that week. This time, the market reacted differently.

Elsewhere, Musk updated Starship, saying the company will “probably catch the ship with the tower in a few months,” with the first reflight expected “either end of this year or early next.” That delays SpaceX’s earlier plan to attempt the catch in August.

The bigger headline for the space industry came from China.

On Tuesday, startup LandSpace landed the first stage of its Zhuque-3 rocket at a launch site in northwest China, the first time a Chinese company has recovered an orbital-class booster on land.

The rocket delivered satellites to orbit on just its second-ever flight, a big improvement after its December 2025 debut lost the booster during descent.

Zhuque-3 stands 216 feet tall and can carry about 40,350 pounds to low Earth orbit. For comparison, SpaceX’s own Falcon 9 is 230 feet tall and carries roughly 50,265 pounds.

SpaceX still holds a massive experience edge, having landed boosters more than 600 times since 2015 versus LandSpace’s one success.

But the achievement shows reusable rocketry is no longer something only SpaceX can do.

What the Market Is Telling Us About SpaceX Stock

The dip below IPO price suggests investors are digesting a wave of new tradable shares rather than reacting to any single piece of bad news.

SpaceX stock proved in early August that it can absorb large unlocks and still climb, so this week’s pullback looks more like short-term supply pressure than a shift in sentiment about the business itself.

Still, with two more major unlock events scheduled before year-end, SpaceX stock may see continued volatility as more shares hit the market.

Investors will also be watching whether China’s LandSpace milestone marks the start of real competitive pressure on SpaceX’s reusable rocket advantage, or simply a one-off achievement still far behind SpaceX’s scale.
