Key Takeaways for S&P Global Stock as of September 2026

  • Guidance Hangover: S&P Global stock is down 14% since the start of the year, weighed down by the roughly 18% single-day drop it took on February 10 after 2026 EPS guidance missed Street estimates.
  • Street Holds the Line: Coverage splits 17 buys, 6 outperforms and 1 hold, and the $520 mean target still sits 17% above the $444 close.
  • Model Upside: TIKR values the stock at $722, implying 63% total return.
  • Buyback Bump: Management raised its 2026 repurchase target by nearly $3 billion to more than $7 billion, over 5% of the current market cap, funded partly by the roughly $2 billion dividend S&P Global collected when it spun off Mobility Global on July 1.

S&P Global Stock’s 14% Slide Traces Back to One February Guidance Miss

S&P global stock year to date
SPGI Stock Price: Year to Date (TIKR)

S&P Global (SPGI) stock has fallen 14% since the start of the year, and the damage traces to a single morning. On February 10, shares dropped as much as 18% after fourth-quarter adjusted profit of $4.30 a share missed estimates by two cents and 2026 guidance of $19.40 to $19.65 undercut the Street’s $19.96 consensus. Investors had priced in a clean handoff into the new year and got a shortfall instead.

The stock never fully recovered. It bottomed near $407 in late June, clawed back to $444 by early September, and still trades well below the $527 level it held in mid-2025.

The business behind that chart has outrun the guidance cut that started it. Second-quarter revenue rose 11% to $4.15 billion and adjusted earnings per share jumped 23% to $4.83, beating the $4.76 estimate, while first-quarter EPS of $4.97 also cleared its $4.81 target.

CEO Martina Cheung tied the beat to execution, not luck, telling analysts on the Q2 2026 earnings call: “With high incremental margins in our benchmark products and disciplined expense management across the business, we were able to deliver 200 basis points of margin expansion, leading to EPS growth of 23%.” Margin discipline, not a friendlier revenue backdrop, is what closed the gap the February guidance opened.

Management backed that execution with capital. It raised the 2026 buyback target by nearly $3 billion to more than $7 billion, over 5% of the current market cap, funded partly by the roughly $2 billion dividend S&P Global collected when it completed the Mobility Global spin-off on July 1.

A guidance cut opened S&P Global stock’s valuation gap in February; two quarters of beats and a bigger buyback are the case for closing it.

A Possible Capital IQ Pro Sale Adds a Fresh Catalyst for SPGI Stock

The same self-help playbook that funded this year’s buyback increase may not be finished. On September 2, a Bloomberg report said S&P Global is weighing a spin-out of its Capital IQ Pro data platform, a deal that could fetch a valuation in the high single digits of billions. Shares rose 3% to $448.84 that day, the kind of reaction a stock starved of good news tends to produce.

Capital IQ Pro sits inside Market Intelligence, the division management already restructured once this year into Kensho Data and Platforms and Enterprise Solutions. A sale would extend the same logic behind the Mobility spin-off: shed a slower-growth asset, redirect the proceeds toward buybacks or the faster-growing Ratings and Indices businesses, and hand the Street a cleaner growth story than the one it punished in February.

S&P Global Stock’s Analysts Never Wavered Even as Targets Came Down

S&P Global stock carries 17 buy ratings, 6 outperforms and 1 hold among the analysts covering it, with a $520 mean target sitting 17% above the $444 close. Coverage has thinned slightly, from 23 targets a year ago to 20 today, but not a single analyst has downgraded to underperform or sell.

That target has moved with the stock, just not as far. A year ago, on June 30, 2025, the mean sat at $586 against a $527 close, an 11% premium. By the June 2026 low, the target had been trimmed to $533 while the stock fell all the way to $407, stretching the premium to 31%, the widest gap in the table’s history. It has since narrowed back to 17% as the stock recovered into September, but that is still a wider cushion than analysts were carrying before the February guidance cut.

TIKR Values SPGI Stock at $722, Pricing In a Full Rebound From the Reset

TIKR’s mid-case model values S&P Global stock at $722 by December 2030, implying 63% total return from the current price of $444, or 12% annualized over 4.3 years.

That 12% annualized path sits above what investors have typically paid up for from a benchmark-heavy compounder, even one still trading near its 2026 low.

The case rests on the same two data points driving this update: a Street that never cut its target as hard as the stock fell, and a management team that used the sell-off to raise its buyback and keep beating its own numbers rather than let the market price in a permanent step-down. If the multiple simply drifts back toward where it traded before February, most of TIKR’s implied return shows up before analysts need to move a single estimate.
