What Happened?

Wall Street’s biggest question surrounding Snowflake Inc. (NYSE: SNOW) is whether accelerating enterprise AI demand can justify the company’s premium valuation as investors grow increasingly cautious about technology spending. Snowflake stock fell more than 8% on Friday, October 16, finishing near $307 per share, down from approximately $335 the previous session. The decline extended a difficult week for AI-related stocks, highlighting the tension between strong operating momentum and elevated expectations for future earnings.

The selloff came amid concerns over debt-financed AI infrastructure spending, as financial pressure at CoreWeave raised questions about whether massive data center investments could generate sufficient returns. That broader shift in sentiment pressured highly valued AI-related companies, although no single Snowflake-specific catalyst fully explains Friday’s decline. Snowflake also competes with Databricks, Amazon Web Services’ Redshift, Microsoft Fabric, and Google BigQuery for enterprise data analytics workloads, making customer retention and product differentiation essential. The decline contrasted with Snowflake’s latest quarterly results, which showed revenue rising 35% to $1.55 billion and product revenue growing 37% to $1.49 billion, suggesting investors were reassessing valuation expectations rather than reacting to a new earnings disappointment.

At the September 15 Piper Sandler Growth Frontiers Conference, Snowflake CFO Brian Robins highlighted accelerating demand after management raised its fiscal 2027 product revenue growth outlook from 31% to 36%. Robins said approximately half of the latest quarterly revenue beat came from AI products and half from the core business, while roughly 9,100 customer accounts had adopted Cortex Code, an AI coding assistant, and more than 5,000 had adopted Cowork, an AI productivity tool. He also cited an 11% uplift in core platform consumption associated with AI adoption, emphasizing that “the core business is doing well and is accelerating.” More recently, Snowflake and Lumen Technologies announced plans to collaborate on October 15, aiming to simplify secure connections between enterprise data systems and Snowflake’s AI platform.

Analyst actions highlighted the divide between Snowflake’s growth prospects and its valuation. On October 12, Phillip Securities downgraded the stock from Buy to Accumulate, retaining its $423 price target, while Needham maintained its Buy rating and $450 target. Truist reiterated its Buy rating and $425 target on October 16, while JPMorgan maintained a positive recommendation. These assessments reflected continued analyst optimism about Snowflake’s AI-driven growth, although Friday’s sharp decline demonstrated how sensitive investors remain to the premium assigned to future earnings.

Is Snowflake Stock Undervalued?

Under the supplied valuation assumptions, the stock is modeled using:

  • Revenue Growth (CAGR): 30%
  • Operating Margins: 16%
  • Exit P/E Multiple: 95x

Snowflake’s latest quarterly revenue increased 35% to $1.55 billion, while its 126% net revenue retention rate shows existing customers collectively increased spending by 26% year over year. Remaining performance obligations reached $9 billion, up 30%, providing visibility into contracted demand, although Snowflake’s consumption-based business still depends on customers actively using its data-processing and AI services.

The profitability outlook is particularly important. TIKR’s EBIT estimates project operating earnings could increase from approximately $920 million in fiscal 2027 to $2 billion by fiscal 2029, while the corresponding EBIT margin is forecast to expand from around 15% to 19%. These projections suggest analysts expect revenue growth to translate into stronger operating leverage, although actual results will depend on Snowflake controlling infrastructure and operating costs.

Competition adds another consideration. Snowflake competes directly with Databricks and the data platforms operated by Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, while adjacent cloud software companies offer useful profitability benchmarks. Cloudflare reported 36% revenue growth and a 14% non-GAAP operating margin, while Datadog delivered 36% revenue growth and a 23% non-GAAP operating margin. Although these companies serve different parts of the cloud market, their results illustrate why Snowflake’s ability to translate rapid growth into sustainable profitability matters to its valuation.

Based on the supplied assumptions, TIKR’s valuation model estimates a target price of around $420, implying approximately 37% total upside through January 2029. However, the 95x exit earnings multiple is demanding, particularly because Snowflake continues reporting GAAP operating losses. The model’s 16% operating margin must also be evaluated on a consistent accounting basis, since adjusted profitability does not necessarily translate into equivalent GAAP earnings. As discussed in TIKR’s earlier Snowflake valuation analysis, elevated valuation multiples remain central to the stock’s investment debate.

Results through the remainder of 2026 will depend on whether Snowflake converts enterprise AI experimentation into sustained customer spending. Snowflake Intelligence allows employees to analyze company data through natural-language questions, while Cortex AI helps businesses develop AI-powered applications. Wider deployment could generate additional consumption revenue as enterprises move from testing these products to using them across daily operations.

Enterprise migrations provide another opportunity. CFO Brian Robins said Snowflake had reduced migration timelines from approximately 10 to 11 months to around six months, potentially allowing customers to begin using the platform sooner. The Lumen collaboration could further support adoption among regulated enterprises by simplifying secure connections to sensitive data, although the companies have not quantified its expected revenue contribution.

Profitability remains the central test of Snowflake’s valuation. The company’s latest quarterly non-GAAP operating margin was approximately 15%, compared with a negative 17% GAAP operating margin, highlighting the impact of costs excluded from adjusted results, including stock-based compensation. Although TIKR’s EBIT chart projects substantial margin expansion over time, those estimates should not be confused with confirmed GAAP profitability. Improving operating efficiency and controlling stock-based compensation will determine how much of Snowflake’s growth ultimately benefits shareholders.

At approximately $307 per share, Snowflake has meaningful long-term growth opportunities, but its premium valuation makes it difficult to conclude that the stock is clearly undervalued. Stronger AI adoption, expanding customer consumption, and sustained margin improvement could support a recovery, while a lower earnings multiple could offset those gains even if the business continues growing.
