What Happened?
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) closed at $342.00 on Friday, October 16, down 7.63%. That came one session after Citi raised its price target to $440 from $410 and kept a Buy rating, citing improving cybersecurity spending. No single catalyst was reported for Friday’s drop, which capped a week in which an OpenAI acquisition report raised the risk that AI labs compete for those budgets.
Shares closed 18.55% below their October 6 closing high of $419.91, though still about 86% above their 2025 close of $184.20. That puts the fiscal 2027 outlook in Palo Alto’s investor relations materials under pressure to hold up.
An OpenAI Report and a Firewall Flaw in the Same Week
Security peers fell with Palo Alto on Friday: CrowdStrike (CRWD) dropped 7.02%, and Fortinet (FTNT) fell 7.03%.
Two sessions earlier, on Wednesday, October 14, Palo Alto fell 5.54%, and the First Trust NASDAQ Cybersecurity ETF lost 3.47%. That was a day after The Information reported that OpenAI was in early talks to buy security firm Trail of Bits. Those are reported talks with no price, not a signed deal.
Palo Alto also disclosed an actively exploited PAN-OS flaw, CVE-2026-0322, on October 14, and CISA gave federal agencies until October 17 to patch it. The company described exploitation as very limited and requiring credentials and management-interface access. Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access are not affected. It follows another exploited PAN-OS flaw in May.

Arora’s $40 Endpoint Math
Chairman and CEO Nikesh Arora laid out the counterargument a month before the OpenAI report, at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia conference on September 10. He put the average industry price at “probably $30 to $40 an endpoint.” He suspected a frontier LLM inspecting the roughly 160 megabytes crossing a laptop each day would cost “more than $40 a year.” His conclusion: “LLMs do not sit in enforcement points.”
That separates finding flaws from blocking attacks. Trail of Bits finds flaws in code, work Arora concedes AI does well, though he added, “It finds 80% mainstream, but it doesn’t understand the intent of the code.”
He also argued that companies historically secure one vendor’s technology with a different vendor’s product. His expectation: “we probably become consumers of frontier LLMs.”
The selloff cut Palo Alto’s forward normalized P/E to around 82 times, from around 95 times on September 30. That compares with around 48 times for Fortinet and around 161 times for CrowdStrike.

TIKR’s mid-case targets around $445 by July 31, 2031, about 30% above Friday’s close. The Street mean of around $399 sits between the price and the model, with 42 of 55 analysts at Buy or Outperform. Citi’s $440 sits about 10% above that mean.
The model’s mid-case assumptions call for revenue growth around 12% a year, about half of fiscal 2026’s 24.5% pace. They also assume a normalized net income margin near 27%, versus 25.5% in fiscal 2026. Revenue leans on next-generation security ARR, which management targets at $20 billion by fiscal 2030. Margins lean on management’s 40% adjusted free cash flow margin target for fiscal 2028.
The primary risk is AI labs moving from code scanning into enforcement. OpenAI’s Daybreak, launched May 12, finds and patches code vulnerabilities. It lists Palo Alto, CrowdStrike, Fortinet, and Zscaler (ZS) as launch partners, so for now it works alongside the incumbents.
Upside: the Street expects 23.5% revenue growth in fiscal 2027, helped by a full year of CyberArk. Downside: another exploited flaw would test the trust that firewall renewals depend on.
Conclusion
The fiscal first-quarter report, which Yahoo Finance estimates for around November 19, is the next test. Management expects the tail end of a large LLM customer’s migration to Chronosphere to land in that quarter. Next-generation security ARR at or above the $9.56 billion top of guidance would show AI pulling budgets toward Palo Alto. A shortfall would give skeptics their first hard number.
