Key Takeaways

  • Elon Musk recently noted that Grok 4.7 ranks first on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, ahead of models including GPT-6 and Opus 5.5.
  • Cyber defense is a category businesses already spend heavily on, so a lead there could give SpaceX’s AI business a path to enterprise revenue beyond consumer chat and renting out compute.
  • One benchmark in one niche is a thin base, and Musk himself says a model at GPT-6’s level overall is still two to three months away.
  • Grok also leads agent trading on Coinbase, and the next thing to watch is whether these niche wins turn into enterprise contracts.

SpaceX (SPCX) just got its first data point on Elon Musk’s six-month AI clock:

Earlier this week, Musk posted: “Grok 4.7 rank 1 on AA cyber index.”

Translation: Grok 4.7, the latest model from SpaceX’s AI business, took first place on the Cyber Index from Artificial Analysis, which runs benchmarks on AI models.

Five days in

Here’s why the timing matters.

On September 24, one X user told Musk, “It’s over for SpaceXAI. In 2-3 months Anthropic and OpenAI will have something even better.”

Musk fired back: “Our AI efforts are only 3 years old, vs 6 and 10 years old for Anthropic and OpenAI. If our second derivative remains strong, SpaceX will reach pole position in about 6 months.”

Five days later, he had a first-place finish to point to.

When I wrote about SpaceX’s three businesses on September 23, I called their AI business “a curious mix of speculative (can Grok compete with the frontier labs?) and predictable (strong cashflows from renting out compute in the Colossus 1 data center to Anthropic and Alphabet).”

A cyber defense win gives the speculative side something a lot more concrete to sell. Businesses already spend real money protecting their networks. Consider the top line at CrowdStrike (CRWD)…

And CrowdStrike is one of several big players, alongside companies like Palo Alto Networks (PANW).

Could they start turning to Grok to power some of their workflows? Ultimately these security companies will need more and stronger AI capabilities to keep their customers safe, and if Grok starts racking up more wins, there’s potential for an opening here.

Plus: Grok is already winning a second niche.

The developer team at Coinbase (COIN) posted that “Grok is pulling away as the dominant agentic trading harness on Coinbase for Agents,” with about 60%(!) share, vs. about 13% for Claude and under 2% for ChatGPT.

CEO Brian Armstrong backed that up: “Grok is the leading client for agentic traders on Coinbase currently.”

It’s early days, yet…

Of course, these are just a few early datapoints, and the news is by no means all good.

Even some Grok fans were rough on 4.7. One X user called it “the biggest fumble” and said it “ended up getting mogged by chinese and free models.”

Musk’s reply: “I am cautiously optimistic that SpaceX will have a Fable/GPT-6 level model in 2 to 3 months.”

So Musk himself isn’t claiming Grok 4.7 matches GPT-6 across the board.

I’d argue that makes the cyber ranking more interesting. It suggests Grok has potential in a substantial paid category. And enterprise buyers shop by category: A security team will buy whichever model (or product the model powers – which I think is the likelier outcome here for SpaceX) is best at stopping intruders.

The upshot

So does “rank 1” matter for SpaceX? Uh, yes. Analysts have sky-high expectations for growth from here.

A benchmark win doesn’t come with a customer list. The thing to watch is whether SpaceX turns it into enterprise contracts that start showing up in those numbers. And given the long enterprise sales cycle, this isn’t something we’ll know in the next few months.

Of course, the AI labs ship new models every few months, and first place on a benchmark can change hands with the next release – including SpaceX’s own Grok 4.8, which is likely due out in the next month or so.
