What Happened?

General Motors (GM) reported a 5.5% drop in Q3 U.S. sales on Thursday. The company sold 670,974 new vehicles.

EVs were the main drag. Demand spiked last year before federal incentives of up to $7,500 ended, and GM posted record EV sales in that period.

This year’s numbers look very different. Equinox EV sales fell 92.4%. Blazer EV sales fell 84.4%, and Hummer EV sales fell 72.9%.

Hybrids are another problem. GM sells only one hybrid, a Corvette. Gas prices are high, with an AAA national average of $4.41, and shoppers are leaning toward hybrids.

Toyota’s electrified sales, which include hybrids, rose 28.5% to 363,367 units. Honda set a record, selling more than 106,000 hybrids.

That helped Toyota narrow the gap with GM to under 136,000 units. The full-year gap last year was about 335,000.

There were some bright spots. Full-size pickups were flat.

Chevrolet Trailblazer sales rose 51%, Buick Envista sales rose 18.4%, and Chevrolet Trax sales rose 16.3%. GM also said sales of gas-powered vehicles were roughly level with last year.

Even so, every GM brand is down so far this year. Cadillac leads the decline at 25%.

What the Market Is Telling Us About General Motors Stock

The sales report adds pressure on General Motors stock. Investors can see that rivals with hybrids are winning ground. Experts expect GM’s weak hybrid lineup to hurt its overall sales.

Still, the picture is not all bad. In July, GM raised its 2026 guidance for the second time this year. It now expects adjusted EPS of $12 to $14.

Its North America margin was 8.6% in Q2. GM also held more than 42% of the U.S. full-size pickup market in the first half.

GM is also returning cash to shareholders. It bought back $2 billion of stock in Q2 and has $3.5 billion left under its current authorization. That gives General Motors stock some support.

The next test is the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. They are due in showrooms in December.

GM North America president Duncan Aldred said the business is “performing very well,” and the launch is on track.

For now, General Motors stock may keep reacting to two things. One is how fast EV sales stabilize. The other is whether GM can answer the shift toward hybrids.
