What Happened?

Micron Technology (MU) closed at $989.04 on October 12, 2026, down 3.88%. At a Shanghai chip conference held October 9 to 10, CXMT President Cao Kanyu said ChangXin Memory Technologies (688825.SS) expects to launch a DDR5 RDIMM server module built on a denser 4F² cell design by year-end.

SK hynix’s U.S.-listed shares (SKHY) fell 4.02% the same day. TradingKey also tied the selloff to broader worries about memory pricing and valuations.

The usual defense is that CXMT has no high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Micron’s investor relations materials show HBM is no longer where Micron earns its richest margins.

Micron’s Non-HBM Units Out-Earned Its HBM Unit

In fiscal Q4 2026, which ended September 3, all three of Micron’s business units that don’t sell HBM out-earned the one that does. Non-GAAP gross margins were:

  • Core Data Center: 90%
  • Mobile and Client: 90%
  • Automotive and Embedded: 84%
  • Cloud Memory (the HBM unit): 83%

Cloud Memory’s margin held flat because higher pricing was “offset by higher HBM mix,” CFO Mark Murphy said. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra added that 2027 HBM price increases are narrowing the gross margin gap with conventional DRAM. CXMT’s planned module is conventional DRAM.

CXMT already competes in servers. Tom’s Hardware reports that server products rose to 26.5% of CXMT’s 2025 revenue, and that it signed a five-year server DRAM deal with ByteDance worth more than $7 billion in July. TrendForce estimates CXMT’s DRAM revenue share rose to 9.5% in Q2 2026 from 7.6% a quarter earlier, against Micron’s 23.3%.

Volume Is the Test, and Supply Is Slow to Build

The announcement is a planned launch. TrendForce notes that commercial availability does not necessarily mean readiness for volume production. It also cites Korea’s Money Today, which reports that CXMT’s first products may only partly adopt 4F².

None of Samsung, SK hynix, or Micron has commercialized 4F² at scale. Samsung’s version is not expected on the market before 2028, according to Korea’s Economy Tribune, as cited by TrendForce.

New supply also takes time. Mehrotra said cleanrooms take a long while to build, and that future node transitions give less productivity gain per wafer. “Even after they are built, even after first wafer output, production ramps up only gradually in the cleanrooms,” he said. Micron guides industry DRAM bit shipments to grow in the low 20s percentage range in both calendar 2027 and 2028.

A second supply risk came up on the same call. TD Cowen’s Krish Sankar asked about talk of a large customer cutting HBM content, which could free wafers for conventional DDR. Mehrotra answered that HBM demand will outgrow industry demand in 2027 and 2028, without addressing the DDR question directly.

Two other items landed the week before the selloff:

  • Netlist settlement: Netlist disclosed on October 6 that Micron will pay $600 million over five years to settle all pending litigation between them.
  • Larger buyback: On October 8, Micron’s board raised its buyback authorization to $35.16 billion, usable from December 9, 2026.

That modest pace lines up with the consensus. Revenue barely grows after fiscal 2028, and NTM estimates aside, normalized net income is forecast to fall about 32% in fiscal 2030. Only five analysts estimate fiscal 2030 revenue, so that figure rests on thin coverage.

The ~$1,555 Street mean, and DA Davidson’s Street-high $3,000 target from October 7 are shorter-horizon analyst targets, and both sit well above the model.

Upside: if supply stays short past 2028, the projected decline arrives too early.

Downside: if CXMT qualifies major server customers at volume, conventional DRAM pricing could weaken before Micron’s new cleanrooms ramp.

Conclusion

Micron reported fiscal Q1 on December 17 last year, so the next read likely lands in mid-to-late December. If non-HBM unit margins hold near 90%, CXMT hasn’t reached pricing yet. A major U.S. server or cloud customer qualifying CXMT’s RDIMM would be the real warning.
