What Happened?

Intel (INTC) stock jumped 9% on Wednesday after the company announced it will buy back the 49% stake in the Irish chip factory it sold to Apollo Global Management back in 2024.

The price tag: $14.2 billion.

  • Intel originally sold that stake for $11.2 billion, so this buyback comes at a premium — but the message it sends is clear. Intel is back on a stronger footing.
  • The facility, known as Fab 34, is located in Ireland and manufactures Intel’s PC and server CPUs.
  • It’s not Intel’s most advanced plant — that’s in Arizona — but it plays a key role.
  • Intel’s latest Xeon 6 server CPU is made there, and it handles part of the advanced packaging process for chips made at the Arizona facility, too.

CFO David Zinsner framed the move as a sign of progress.

  • When Intel sold the stake in 2024, the company was under serious financial pressure and needed flexibility.
  • Now, with a stronger balance sheet and clearer strategy, Intel is comfortable consolidating ownership.

The timing matters.

  • There’s a growing case that CPUs — Intel’s bread and butter — are having a moment.
  • NVIDIA recently said CPUs are “becoming the bottleneck” as agentic AI changes how computing works.
  • Futurum Group went further, predicting that CPU market growth could outpace GPU growth by 2028.

Intel stock is getting a lift partly because investors are connecting those dots.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Intel Stock

Intel stock has had a rough few years, but today’s move signals renewed investor confidence.

Buying back the Ireland stake shows Intel isn’t just stabilizing — it’s starting to play offense again.

The CPU demand story is real. Agentic AI needs a different kind of computing power than training AI models does, and that plays directly to Intel’s strengths.

Server CPU demand is strong, and Intel said its customers are pushing for as much supply as possible.

INTC Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Intel stock still faces challenges.

The company is supply-constrained right now and hasn’t yet landed a major external customer for its most advanced 18A manufacturing process in Arizona.

But with a cleaner balance sheet and a CPU market that’s regaining relevance, Intel stock is giving investors something to work with again.
