Why GRAIL Stock Jumped 34% Ahead of Wednesday’s FDA Vote

GRAIL, Inc. (GRAIL) stock jumped 34% on Monday, September 21, after the FDA released briefing documents showing its staff reviewers found no major safety or accuracy problems with the company’s Galleri multi-cancer blood test. Shares closed at $108, their best single day in more than a year and a half.

The FDA posted the documents ahead of Wednesday’s meeting of its external advisory committee, which is reviewing GRAIL’s premarket approval application for Galleri. The agency told its panel it has no outstanding questions on the test’s analytical performance, study design, or primary safety analyses. That is the part investors keyed on. Piper Sandler analyst David Westenberg called the update “constructive for Grail” and said he expects a favorable vote from the panel.

RBC Capital Markets read it the same way. Its analysts said the documents “read positively for Galleri’s approval case” because the FDA’s remaining questions center “mostly on labeling rather than core test validity and safety.” That distinction matters. A safety or validity objection can sink a device. A labeling fight, by contrast, is something GRAIL can usually negotiate through.

The one open question the FDA did raise is whether Galleri’s data supports calling it an “early detection” test. That question traces straight back to February, when GRAIL’s three-year UK trial, NHS-Galleri, failed to significantly cut late-stage cancer diagnoses versus standard screening alone. GRAIL stock lost more than 20% of its value in the aftermath and has spent the months since rebuilding investor confidence around a narrower case: that Galleri still finds a large share of cancers at stages where curative treatment is still possible, even if it didn’t move the late-stage numbers the trial was built to test.

GRAIL filed its FDA application in January on a mix of PATHFINDER 2 data, the first year of NHS-Galleri, and a bridging analysis tying the two together. Approval would put Galleri ahead of Abbott’s competing Cancerguard test, which remains on the market without FDA sign-off, and would open the door to routine insurance coverage that neither test currently gets. Monday’s rally says the market now expects that approval path to clear. The labeling question is the one thing standing between here and that outcome.

The FDA’s clean review didn’t answer whether Galleri counts as “early detection.” It answered the safety question, and that was enough to unlock a third of the stock’s value in a single session.

GRAL Stock Now Trades Well Above the Street’s $79 Target

TIKR tracks 11 analysts on GRAL stock as of September 21, split 5 buys and 6 holds. Their mean price target sits at $79, a figure that now sits 27% below Monday’s $108 close.

Street Analysts Target for GRAIL Stock (TIKR)

That gap has opened and closed fast before. In mid-2025, 2 analysts covered GRAL stock with a $41 mean target, already behind the rising price. By December, 3 analysts had pushed the target to $105, ahead of the $86 close. Then the February trial disappointment hit: the stock crashed to $52 by March, but the mean target only fell to $72, a 40% gap. By June, price and target had converged near $68 and $66.

Monday broke that balance again. GRAL stock nearly doubled on the FDA news while the mean target rose to just $79, even as coverage grew to 10 target-setters and 11 total analysts. The Street has lagged GRAIL’s biggest moves in both directions, and this gap is the widest since the late-2025 target chase.
