What Happened?
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) stock is in the spotlight today after Warren Buffett announced he’s stepping down as chairman, effective immediately.
Buffett, now 96, has led the company since 1965.
He’ll become chairman emeritus and remain a director, but his son Howard Buffett is taking over as chairman, following a succession plan in place for years.
Susan Decker continues as lead independent director.
This news comes about nine months after Greg Abel took over as CEO, while Buffett kept the chairman title.
Buffett first announced plans to hand off the CEO role back in May 2025, and the transition has played out gradually since then.
In his letter to shareholders, Buffett wrote that “Father Time always wins” but said he’s confident about where Berkshire Hathaway stock and the business stand today.
Even as chairman this year, Buffett stayed involved. Abel told CNBC in March that Buffett was still coming into the Omaha office every day.
Buffett attended May’s annual meeting, and in July he revealed he personally drove Berkshire’s decision to invest $10 billion in Alphabet, which is now the company’s third-largest stock holding behind Apple and American Express.
Buffett’s track record speaks for itself.
He took over what was a failing textile mill at age 34 and built it into a company with $44.5 billion in operating earnings last year and nearly 400,000 employees.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Berkshire Hathaway Stock
Berkshire Hathaway stock has had a rough 2026, up just 1% while the S&P 500 has climbed more than 11%.
