What Happened?
General Motors (GM) CEO Mary Barra said on Monday that the company is on track to launch “eyes-off, hands-off” driving by 2028, speaking with CNBC’s Jim Cramer on “Mad Money.”
GM plans to debut the system in the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028. It will then expand to other models.
Today’s Super Cruise lets drivers take their hands off the wheel, but they must stay attentive. The new system is built to let drivers look away from the road under certain conditions.
Barra said she tested it recently and was impressed by how much it had improved since an earlier ride in March.
“When people want to drive, they can. When they don’t, they won’t need to as that grows,” she said.

She also defended GM’s decision to exit the Cruise robotaxi business in December 2024. GM spent more than $10 billion on it.
Barra called it a tough but right call. GM kept much of the Cruise team to work on cars people own. “We’re not in the taxi business,” she said.

What the Market Is Telling Us About General Motors Stock
For General Motors stock, this is a reassurance more than a surprise. The plan was announced last October, and Barra simply confirmed it is still on schedule.
That matters because GM is building a software business around its driver-assist tech. On its July earnings call, the company said Super Cruise attach rates run 30% to 40% once the included service period ends.
GM expects 1 million new subscriptions this year. It also expects more than $3 billion in recognized software and services revenue in 2026.
Deferred revenue from subscribers reached $6.3 billion, up almost 50% from a year ago. GM also plans to make Super Cruise standard on high-end Silverado and Sierra trims.
It estimates that move will add 160,000 Super Cruise units.
The core business is solid too. Q2 revenue was $48 billion. North America margin was 8.6%. GM raised its 2026 EPS guidance to $12-$14.
On the July call, Barra also said the autonomy program is largely meeting its milestones, calling the plan aggressive.

The timeline is tight, and the tech is still in development. Tariffs and higher memory costs are also weighing on costs.
But General Motors stock is increasingly tied to software, not only trucks. Investors weighing General Motors stock will want to watch whether the 2028 date holds.
