What Happened?
Ford (F) CEO Jim Farley has a clear message for Washington: don’t rush to let Chinese automakers into the U.S.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Automotive News Congress in Detroit, Farley pointed to Europe as a warning.
He said leaders there didn’t take their time, and now it’s “too late” for that region. He believes the U.S. can still be more careful.
The numbers explain his concern. Chinese brands grew their global market share by nearly 70% from 2020 to 2025, according to GlobalData.
In Europe, their share went from almost nothing in 2020 to 12% in August, according to Dataforce.
The timing is important.
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with President Donald Trump last week. Earlier this month, Trump said he might be “OK” with Chinese automakers entering the U.S. if they build cars here.
Meanwhile, bills in Congress could restrict or even permanently ban Chinese car brands.

Ford is in a tricky position.
This month, the Trump administration sent Ford a letter expressing “profound concern” about its ties to Chinese companies.
In July, Ford agreed to let China’s Geely build EVs at a Ford plant in Spain through a new joint venture.
Farley says the approach is simple. Ford will partner with Chinese companies where it lacks the technology and can save money, such as in Europe or Southeast Asia.
But it also plans to compete with them directly.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Ford Stock
For Ford stock, the China debate is more long-term than short-term. Cheap Chinese EVs on American roads could put pressure on prices across the industry.
Ford’s main answer is its universal EV platform, which launches next year with a pickup truck.
On its Q2 earnings call, Farley said the first model will start around $30,000, offer more cabin room than a Toyota RAV4, and include a truck bed.
The core business gives Ford some breathing room. In Q2, revenue fell 4% to $48.3 billion, but adjusted EBIT (a measure of operating profit) rose 17% to $2.5 billion.
Ford also raised its full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to $10 billion to $11 billion, a $1 billion increase at the midpoint.
Farley has also argued for trade rules that help companies building cars in the U.S. compete more fairly with imports from Japan and South Korea.

Anyone watching Ford stock should watch two things: how Washington handles Chinese automakers and whether Ford’s new EV can compete on price.
Both could shape where Ford stock goes from here.
