Dell Technologies (DELL) shares fell 21% over the five trading sessions ending October 19, compared with a 3.7% decline in the Nasdaq 100.

The biggest drop came October 14, when Dell plunged 11.3% following a Barclays downgrade. AI server competitor Super Micro Computer (SMCI) fell 19.7% over the same period, highlighting broader weakness across AI infrastructure stocks.

Higher interest rate expectations and concerns about AI hardware valuations added pressure. Despite the correction, Dell remained up approximately 262% in 2026 through October 19.

Why Barclays Is Questioning Dell’s AI Growth

Barclays analyst Tim Long downgraded Dell from Overweight to Equal Weight and lowered his price target from $603 to $574, citing valuation concerns and limited evidence of a meaningful AI spending inflection among enterprise customers.

The bank questioned how much of Dell’s revenue growth comes from higher memory prices rather than stronger underlying demand.

If memory prices stabilize, revenue growth could slow even while AI server demand remains healthy.

Dell’s fiscal second-quarter revenue increased 58% to $47 billion, while AI orders reached a record $60.9 billion and its backlog climbed to $95 billion.

Wall Street expects revenue of approximately $193 billion for the fiscal year ending January 2027 and $229 billion the following year.

Dell’s Next Major Test Is Cash Flow

Dell generated $986 million in free cash flow during its fiscal second quarter, down 47% year over year, as customer financing receivables absorbed $6.67 billion in cash.

Analysts expect approximately $12 billion in full-year free cash flow. With $4.10 billion generated in the first half, Dell would need roughly $7.9 billion in the second half to meet that estimate.

That makes cash conversion an important test as Dell works through its growing AI backlog.

Is Dell Stock Attractively Valued After the Selloff?

Dell’s forward P/E declined from an August peak above 26x to around 16x as of October 16, but remained above its five-year average of approximately 12x.

The average analyst price target of $593, based on October 14 data, implied approximately 30% upside from Dell’s October 19 closing price of $455.44.

Dell’s recent selloff suggests investors are growing more cautious about the AI infrastructure rally, but its $95 billion backlog indicates underlying demand remains substantial.

At approximately 16x forward earnings, Dell looked more reasonably valued, although that was still above its historical average. For now, the AI rally appears to be cooling rather than disappearing, with stronger cash generation needed to support another sustained advance.
