Key Takeaways

  • Borrowed Rally: Cognizant stock rose 12% last week to $66 without a fresh earnings update. Thursday’s 5% jump matched gains of 5-6% across IT services peers.
  • Discount Still Wide: NTM P/E recovered to 10.87x from a 6.69x low this summer, yet sits ~22% below its 14.01x average since late 2023.
  • Street Caught Up: 10 buys, 3 outperforms, and 16 holds carry a $66.34 mean target, less than 1% above the price.
  • October 29 Test: Q3 results must hold the $5.70-$5.82 2026 adjusted EPS outlook, six days after Infosys reports.

Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH) stock rose 12% last week, from $59 on Friday, October 9, to $66 on Friday, October 16. Nearly half of that came on Thursday, when shares jumped 5% as money poured into IT services stocks on the same day AI and chip stocks sold off around the world.

The rally came without a fresh earnings update from Cognizant and left the stock near the Street’s average price target, with results due October 29.

Money Ran From AI Chips Into IT Services

Every IT services name moved with Cognizant on Thursday. EPAM Systems (EPAM) rose 6.3%, while Kyndryl, DXC Technology and Gartner gained between 5.2% and 5.8%. That came as worries about AI spending and higher rates sent chip stocks lower again, after South Korea’s KOSPI fell almost 8% overnight.

Tuesday’s 3% gain followed the same script. A slide in Asian chipmakers pushed Indian IT stocks toward their best day in 17 months, led by HCLTech, which had reported results the night before.

In between, Accenture (ACN) gave investors a reason to stay. At its October 14 investor day, it targeted mid-single-digit revenue growth in fiscal 2027 and 2028, rising to mid-to-high single digits in 2029, plus 10 to 30 basis points of margin expansion a year. After a year of AI fears around consulting, the industry’s biggest player put numbers on growth.

Cognizant’s financial guidance remained unchanged, and its own news during the week gave the rally little to work with:

Cognizant Stock Is Still Cheap Against Its Own History

The rally ran on sector money, with no new numbers from Cognizant, so it shows up in the multiple. Cognizant now trades at 10.87x next-12-month normalized earnings, up from a 6.69x low this summer.

That’s a 62% re-rating from the bottom, and the stock still trades 22% below its 14.01x average since late 2023. Early this year, before the AI scare hit IT services, the multiple sat above 15x.

Put the gap in dollars. At 10.87x, the $66 price implies about $6.07 of next-12-month earnings. The same earnings at the 14.01x average would price the stock around $85, close to where the Street’s mean target sat from last September through March.

Last week closed part of the discount. Most of it is still there.

The Street’s Targets Finally Caught the Stock

Analysts’ mean target is $66.34, less than 1% above Friday’s close. The split is 10 buys, 3 outperforms, and 16 holds.

The gap closed from both ends. At the end of June, the stock traded at $39 against a $68 mean target, which pointed to 76% upside. Since then, the price has climbed 70%, while the mean target slipped to $64 by September 30 and has risen only 3% since.

The ratings have barely moved, with holds at 16 since June. The high target did climb to $93 from $84 since September 30. With the mean now roughly matching the price, analysts’ current targets imply little additional upside on average.

What Cognizant Has to Prove on October 29

Cognizant reports third-quarter results on Thursday, October 29, and the number to watch is whether it holds that $5.70 to $5.82 EPS outlook. Infosys (INFY) reports six days earlier, on October 23, and Emkay Global Financial Services expects it to lower its fiscal 2027 constant-currency revenue growth guidance to 1.5% to 2.5%, from 1.5% to 3%. A cut there would be the first test of whether last week’s sector money stays.

Last week looked like the market deciding IT services had sold off too hard. At 10.87x, Cognizant still has room in its multiple. With the stock already on the Street’s mean target, though, the next leg needs Q3 to hold that guidance.
