Citigroup (C) beat Wall Street’s estimates on Tuesday, October 13, and the stock fell anyway. Citi reported third-quarter net income of $5.25 billion, or $2.85 a share, above the $2.66 analysts expected, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. Revenue rose 8% to $23.8 billion. Shares were down about 3.8%, trading near $127 during Tuesday’s session.
It’s the second quarter in a row that a beat met a selloff. Citi’s Q2 results drew a 5% drop in July.
Citi’s Steadiest Businesses Carried the Quarter
Services and Wealth led revenue growth, supported by both net interest income and fees. Services revenue rose 15% to $6.6 billion, and Wealth also grew 15%, to $3.3 billion. CEO Jane Fraser said Services had “momentum in every driver.”
Trading went the other way. Markets revenue fell to $6.1 billion from $7.0 billion in the second quarter, a 13% sequential drop, though it was still up 6% from a year earlier. Equities did most of the damage, sliding from $2.3 billion to $1.7 billion.
What TIKR Data Shows About Citi’s Mix

The chart shows two very different businesses. Services climbed from $5.02 billion in the September 2024 quarter to $6.38 billion in June 2026, up 27%, and dipped only once along the way. Markets swung between $4.54 billion and $7.25 billion, a high-to-low gap of 60%.
In the third quarter, Services and Wealth together brought in about $9.9 billion, roughly 1.6 times what Markets earned.
The Returns and Outlook Behind the Beat
Returns went backward from Q2. Return on tangible common equity fell to 11.5% from 13.0%, and management told analysts to expect Markets revenue to drop about 20% from the third quarter, “possibly a bit more.” On $6.1 billion, that points to under $5 billion in the fourth quarter.

The multiple also shows the market has already paid for some of the turnaround. Citi trades at 11.40 times forward earnings, above its three-year average of 10.43 times and level with Bank of America (BAC) at 11.27 times. JPMorgan (JPM) still gets 13.65 times, a premium of about 20% to Citi.
Does Citi Need a Re-Rating to Work?

I built my model to answer that, so I gave Citi no credit for one. I have the P/E shrinking about 2% a year, revenue growing 4.1% a year, below this quarter’s 8% growth, with management expecting a seasonal decline in Markets revenue in Q4), and the net income margin reaching 21.5%, up from 14.9% last year as management pushes toward its 11% to 13% return targets.
That gets Citi to about $179 by the end of 2030, a 36% gain from the $132 it closed at before earnings, or 7.6% a year. After Tuesday’s drop, the gap to the target is closer to 41%. It’s a respectable return built entirely on earnings growth, and it lines up with the $179 in TIKR’s October 5 preview. The quarter didn’t change the math.
The Bull and Bear Read on Citi Stock
The bull read is that Citi now has a revenue base that doesn’t hang on trading. Services and Wealth both grew sequentially while Markets fell, and sustained growth in those businesses could support a higher valuation for Citi.
The bear read is that returns are moving the wrong way. RoTCE slipped from Q2, and management has already flagged the usual fourth-quarter drop in trading revenue, which Fraser called normal seasonality.
The growth in Services and Wealth is the better signal. Citi doesn’t need JPMorgan’s multiple to work, but it needs Services to keep growing in the quarters when trading doesn’t.
