What Happened?

Dell Technologies (DELL) booked record revenue in its fiscal second quarter and kept less free cash than a year earlier. In the quarter ended July 31, revenue rose 57.75% to $46.97 billion. Free cash flow (operating cash flow minus capital spending) fell 47.22% to $986 million, about 77% below the Street’s estimate.

Dell’s reconciliation in its investor relations materials shows where the cash went. Growth in financing receivables, the loans and payment plans Dell extends to customers, absorbed $6.667 billion. Adding that back, plus $496 million tied to leased equipment, gives Dell’s adjusted free cash flow of $8.149 billion. Shares closed at $576.76 on October 12, a 358% price gain since the end of 2025.

Dell Is Lending Into the AI Build-Out, Short Term Only

Inventories more than doubled to $21.29 billion between January 30 and July 31. Accounts payable rose $16.093 billion over the same stretch, which more than covered the $10.853 billion inventory build. That fits the negative cash conversion cycle described by Chief Financial Officer David Kennedy, meaning Dell typically collects from customers before paying suppliers. At Citi’s 2026 Global TMT Conference on September 10, he said “the more you grow, the more you grow profitably, the more cash we’ll create.”

Customer financing is the swing factor. By Kennedy’s figures, debt allocated to Dell Financial Services rose to $20 billion from $14 billion, reflecting AI growth. He said Dell will stay selective: “It will be short term in nature, though.” Long-term financing for neoclouds (AI-focused cloud providers) is off the table: “I have no desire to use Dell’s balance sheet to do that.”

The October 1 agreement with Japan’s JERA follows that line. Dell would supply rack-scale AI infrastructure for a planned 400-megawatt campus near Tokyo, while Apollo-backed RHAELM would develop and finance the site. The deal is a memorandum of understanding. Its $15 billion-plus price covers land, power, construction, and computing equipment, so it is not a Dell order.

Supply Tightens as the Cash Test Approaches

Kennedy expects the shortage to worsen: “As we look into next year, we see the supply differential only getting worse, not getting better.” Parts in an AI box are short “to some degree,” he said. Dell is now discussing customers’ supply needs for years two through four, with one condition: “Guarantee supply does not guarantee price.” He also guided operating expenses to 8% of revenue this fiscal year, down from 20% six years ago.

TIKR’s consensus calls for about $12 billion of free cash flow in fiscal 2027. Dell produced $4.104 billion in the first half, so it needs roughly $8 billion in the back half. Dell’s forward P/E ratio rose from about 10 times on January 30 to about 20 times on October 12.

PCs are shrinking at the same time. IDC estimates Dell’s PC shipments fell 25% in calendar Q3 2026 (July to September). Kennedy had projected an 18% to 20% unit decline in consumer PCs and said Dell moved some consumer wafer supply to infrastructure in the spring.

The TIKR model’s mid case puts Dell around $740 by January 31, 2031, about 28% above the $576.76 entry, or around 6% a year. For context, Street estimates in TIKR call for revenue near $225 billion in fiscal 2028 and normalized net margins of roughly 8% to 9% through fiscal 2030. The primary risk is cash: if financing receivables keep absorbing earnings, buybacks shrink.

Analysts count 14 Buy, 6 Outperform, 8 Hold, 1 Underperform, and 1 No Opinion, with a mean target near $590. The highest target, $735, roughly matches the model. The lowest, $480, sits about 17% below the October 12 close.

Conclusion

Dell has not yet confirmed its fiscal third-quarter report date; it reported the same quarter last year on November 25. Watch free cash flow and financing receivables together. Free cash flow near $4 billion keeps the full-year consensus within reach. Another quarter under $1 billion would put more weight on borrowing. In the second quarter, Dell spent $3.796 billion on buybacks while raising $4.386 billion of new debt and repaying $1.017 billion.
