What Happened?

Chipotle (CMG) stock is moving higher after the company reported Q1 results that came in ahead of expectations.

  • The big surprise was same-store sales. They grew 0.5% in the quarter, a notable turnaround after declining in Q4.
  • Wall Street had actually expected a 0.7% drop. That beat matters a lot for a company trying to prove last year’s struggles are behind it.
  • Revenue rose 7.4% to $3.09 billion, slightly above the $3.07 billion analysts expected.
  • Earnings came in at 24 cents per share, in line with forecasts.
  • Profits fell from $386.6 million to $302.8 million.
  • The main culprits were higher beef costs, wage inflation, and a higher tax rate. None of that is unique to Chipotle right now, but it did put pressure on margins.

CEO Scott Boatwright said results beat the company’s own internal expectations, and that sales momentum has carried into April.

The relaunch of Chicken Al Pastor, the new cilantro lime sauce, and a revamped loyalty program all helped bring back younger diners who had been eating at home to save money.

Traffic rose 0.6% in the quarter. That may sound small, but a year ago, transactions had fallen 2.3%. The direction has clearly changed.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Chipotle Stock

Chipotle stock has had a tough stretch. Customers at similar price points pulled back in 2025, and the chain felt it. But these results suggest the recovery plan is starting to work.

That said, there are real headwinds. Beef and avocado costs are rising. The U.S.-Iran conflict has pushed fuel prices higher and contributed to softness in sales in March.

Chipotle also expects to open fewer international restaurants this year due to delays in the Middle East.

CMG Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Management kept full-year same-store sales guidance at roughly flat, which CFO Adam Rymer called “conservative.” That suggests Chipotle stock could have more room if the momentum holds.

For now, the Q1 beat gives investors a reason to feel more optimistic about where this business is headed.
