What Happened?

Boeing (BA) was picked to build the US Navy’s next-generation stealth fighter, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The $20 billion development contract covers test aircraft. Over its lifetime, the program could grow to hundreds of billions as production ramps up and international customers possibly place orders.

Boeing beat out Northrop Grumman for the deal. Lockheed Martin was dropped from the race in March 2025 after Navy officials said its design missed required criteria.

This is Boeing’s second big fighter win in two years. It was also chosen in March last year to build the Air Force’s F-47. Boeing had largely exited the fighter business before these two wins.

The new jet, called F/A-XX, is meant to replace the Super Hornet. It is expected to have advanced stealth, longer range, and the ability to work with uncrewed combat aircraft.

First production jets are expected in the 2030s.

The contract is a boost for Boeing’s St. Louis operations, which are shutting down the Super Hornet and Growler lines.

Boeing Defense chief Steve Parker said the team is “ready to execute this critical program.”

The road here was bumpy.

Some Pentagon officials wanted to delay the program by up to three years over engineering and supply chain concerns.

Congress stepped in with $750 million, plus another $1.4 billion in fiscal 2026.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Boeing Stock

Investors liked the news. Boeing stock rose 2.25% in extended trading, while Northrop shares fell 3.5%.

The win also adds to a business that was already improving.

  • In Q2, Boeing’s revenue rose 8% to $24.6 billion.
  • It delivered 171 commercial airplanes, its best quarter since 2018.
  • Its backlog stands at a record $715 billion. Free cash flow was positive at $631 million.
  • Still, Boeing stock comes with real risks. Boeing posted a core loss of $0.76 per share in Q2.
  • It also took a $280 million charge on the VC-25B program.
  • Debt was $45.9 billion at quarter-end.
BA Stock Street Target (TIKR)

There is one more question mark.

Defense officials had wondered whether Boeing has enough engineers and suppliers to build both the F-47 and the Navy jet.

Those worries appear to be settled in Boeing’s favor. But analyst Jeremiah Gertler noted it is still unclear whether the two jets are being developed together or separately.

Because production is not expected until the 2030s, this win is about long-term growth. For Boeing stock, the near-term story remains its commercial ramp-up and cash flow.
