Why Astera Labs Stock Jumped 10% on S&P 500 Inclusion Bets

Astera Labs (ALAB) stock jumped 10% on Friday, September 4, closing at $310.40, as traders bet the semiconductor connectivity company will land a spot in the S&P 500 during this month’s quarterly rebalance. S&P Dow Jones Indices is expected to announce the additions after the close on September 18, with changes taking effect around September 21.

The bet has been building for weeks. Back on August 1, S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed Ferguson Enterprises would replace Electronic Arts in the index once EA’s buyout closed, and at least one analyst flagged Astera Labs, Bloom Energy, Reddit, and Rocket Companies as other names eligible for a future slot. That list resurfaced hard on Friday.

The math behind the trade is straightforward. Astera Labs carries a market capitalization near $47.6 billion, well clear of the roughly $22.7 billion floor the index typically requires, and funds that track the S&P 500 account for close to 30% of its ownership base. If the company gets the nod, those funds become forced buyers, not discretionary ones.

Real fundamentals back the rally too, well beyond the index math. Astera Labs reported second-quarter revenue of $392.4 million on August 4, more than double the year-ago figure and above the $360.7 million analysts expected, while adjusted earnings per share of $0.80 beat the $0.69 consensus. Management guided third-quarter revenue to a range of $540 million to $560 million, implying roughly 40% sequential growth, and said its Scorpio X switching chips entered volume production ahead of schedule.

Not every data point lined up bullish. Astera Labs director Manuel Alba disclosed on September 1 that he had sold 182,702 shares for roughly $50.3 million, trimming his stake held through the Alba Trust and Casa Alameda entities. Insider selling rarely derails a stock riding index speculation on its own, and ALAB stock shrugged this one off three days later.

The stock’s reaction says the market is treating passive S&P 500 buying as close to inevitable, not merely possible, and that repricing is now the thing the Street’s targets and TIKR’s model both have to answer for.

Astera Labs Stock: A Rising Mean Target Through Wild Swings

That mean target has not fallen once in five quarterly updates. It started at $102 in June 2025, when ALAB stock closed at $90, and has climbed every quarter since, hitting $272 by June 2026 and $390 now. The stock’s own path proved far rockier. It swung down to $110 by March 2026, then spiked to $483 by June, before settling back to $310 in early September.

Coverage has broadened alongside the target, from 17 analysts issuing ratings in mid-2025 to 26 now, and holds have grown faster than buys, up from a single hold a year ago to seven today. That shift matters. A widening hold camp usually means analysts think the stock has caught up to their numbers, not that they expect it to keep sprinting. Analysts are turning more selective even as they keep lifting targets, and that split is exactly what the S&P 500 speculation is testing: the Street likes the business, but it hasn’t yet built a forced-buyer event into the number.

TIKR’s Model Puts Astera Labs Stock’s Target at $762 by 2030

TIKR’s mid-case model values Astera Labs stock at $762 by December 2030, implying 146% total return from the current price of $310, or 23% annualized over 4.3 years.

That 23% annualized rate looks more reasonable once the multiple is on the table. ALAB stock trades at 55x forward earnings now, down from a July peak of 143x and below the 66x it carried in June 2025, and that compression means the model’s upside comes from earnings growth, not from the market paying a richer multiple again.

The target is reachable because the two forces behind Friday’s move point the same way. A confirmed S&P 500 seat would hand the stock a buyer base with no price sensitivity, and the Street’s mean target has already climbed every quarter without a single cut, evidence that estimates are catching up to the growth story rather than getting ahead of it.
