What Happened?

Rocket Lab (RKLB) built one of the biggest fan bases in the space industry over the past two years. Investors piled in as the company won defense contracts, launched rockets at a record pace, and inched closer to becoming a true rival to SpaceX.

Then the stock pulled back hard. Shares that once traded near $151 have slid into the $60 to $64 range, down roughly 57%. That is a steep fall for a company that just posted its best quarter yet.

So what gives? The business is not falling apart. In fact, Rocket Lab just reported record revenue. The selloff is really a story about sky-high expectations meeting reality, along with some real questions investors want answered before they pay up again.

Rocket Lab stock price target debates heat up

At its peak, Rocket Lab traded at more than 50 times forward sales. That is an enormous premium, even for a fast-growing aerospace company. It priced in near-perfect execution across every part of the business for years.

Once broader appetite for speculative space stocks cooled, that premium could not hold. The stock reset sharply even though revenue growth stayed above 60% year over year.

Analysts building out an RKLB stock price target now have to weigh that growth against a business still burning cash while it builds out its next-generation rocket.

Here is a quick snapshot of how sentiment has shifted:

  • Contract backlog: jumped from around $1 billion to more than $2.3 billion, a sign the underlying business keeps strengthening
  • Price-to-sales ratio: roughly 50 times at the peak versus about 35 to 38 times today
  • Neutron rocket timeline: once expected to fly smoothly in 2025 or 2026, now narrowing toward late 2026 or slipping into 2027
  • Capital structure: dilution from stock sales and acquisitions has grown heavier

Neutron rocket delays weigh on Rocket Lab stock

A big chunk of Rocket Lab’s long-term value rests on Neutron, the medium lift rocket built to compete directly with SpaceX’s Falcon 9.

Ground testing issues, including a Stage 1 tank rupture, pushed the target launch date toward the end of 2026.

Founder and CEO Peter Beck was candid about where the real risk lies during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Aug. 10, 2026.

Asked which milestones carry the highest risk before Neutron reaches the pad, he said the stage testing is always the moment that “gets your adrenaline running because you have fully fueled vehicles on the pad” and the engines ignite for the first time.

That kind of honesty from leadership matters, but it also explains why the market keeps discounting the stock until Neutron actually flies. Launch vehicle delays tend to get punished hard, and Rocket Lab has already pushed its timeline once.

Building Neutron is not cheap. Between engine production for its Archimedes engine, testing infrastructure, and new launch pads, Rocket Lab needed a lot of cash.

The company leaned on an at-the-market stock offering program that raised more than $1 billion in the first half of the year before it was shut down.

That kind of fundraising keeps the balance sheet strong, but it also dilutes existing shareholders. On top of that, Rocket Lab has been on an acquisition spree, closing deals for Motiv Space Systems and Mynaric while also announcing plans to acquire Iridium Communications.

Integration costs and amortization from those deals have weighed on GAAP profitability, even as adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) came in well ahead of guidance.

Backlog growth keeps RKLB stock bulls hopeful

None of this means the business is struggling.

Rocket Lab posted $234 million in second-quarter revenue, up 62% from a year earlier, according to the company’s earnings release.

Backlog closed the quarter at $2.36 billion, and the company signed more than $1 billion in new launch and space systems contracts in the weeks after the quarter closed.

Space Systems revenue alone grew nearly 39% sequentially, and the company’s Space Force contracts, including an $86 million VICTUS HAZE mission, show the Pentagon trusts Rocket Lab with tactically responsive missions few competitors can match.

The stock’s slide looks less like a warning sign about the business and more like the market working through what a fair price looks like for a company still proving out its riskiest, most important product.

Investors watching RKLB stock price target updates in the months ahead will likely key off one thing above all else: whether Neutron actually reaches orbit before the window closes on 2026.

For now, though, investors in SpaceX stock are looking at a company operating at a scale no rival, including Isar, currently comes close to matching.

The real question going forward is whether Europe’s newest challenger can turn political support and early technical success into the launch frequency that would start chipping away at SpaceX’s dominant market share.
