What Happened?
Tesla (TSLA) has nearly quadrupled its Cybercab fleet in Texas in about a month. The driverless two-seaters launched in Austin on Sept. 3.
At that time, 45 were authorized for commercial use. As of Friday, that number was 169, based on Texas DMV records.
The Cybercab has no steering wheel, pedals, or side mirrors. Early riders gave it mixed reviews. Some complained about long waits and pickups in the wrong spot.
Others reported problems with the butterfly doors and trunk. One frequent rider said waits were often 45 minutes or more at launch, but have improved as demand evened out.
Tesla stock also got a lift on Friday. The company reported better-than-expected Q3 deliveries, and shares rose almost 5%.
Still, deliveries fell 2% year over year. Tesla also faces pressure from cheaper models by Chinese rivals like BYD and Xiaomi.

Regulators are watching too. NHTSA opened an audit query after the launch to check that the Cybercab meets federal safety standards.
Tesla asked for more time to answer, and it got an extension.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Tesla Stock
Investors want proof that Tesla can grow beyond Austin. Austin is the only city running the Cybercab right now. Texas also has 420 Model Y vehicles in the Robotaxi fleet.
Waymo is far ahead. It has 1,154 authorized vehicles in Texas, runs over 500,000 paid rides a week, and operates in 15 U.S. markets.
On the Q2 call, Tesla said it expects capital spending above $25 billion this year. Management pointed to Robotaxi and Optimus as key bets.
That spending raises the stakes for the Cybercab rollout.

Tesla stock is still down 15% this year. It is the only megacap tech stock without a positive return in 2026.
Friday’s bounce shows investors will respond to good news. But the market clearly wants faster fleet growth and fewer rider complaints before it gets more excited about Tesla stock.
