What Happened?
Ford (NYSE: F) held on to its No. 3 spot in U.S. sales in Q3. The margin was very small, and Cox Automotive had forecast that Hyundai would pass Ford for the first time.
Ford sold 507,395 light-duty vehicles. That is down 6.6% from last year. The number leaves out its largest heavy-duty trucks.
Hyundai, Kia and Genesis together sold 506,200, up 5.4%. Both companies did better than expected.
Ford still leads Hyundai by about 89,700 units for the year. General Motors is first in 2026 sales, and Toyota is second.
Ford has had a rough year.
Two supplier fires last year hurt F-Series production and sales. The Escape was also discontinued, which makes comparisons harder.

There are some bright spots. F-Series sales fell only 1.9%, even with a 97.1% drop for the discontinued F-150 Lightning.
Rob Kaffl, Ford’s head of U.S. sales, said early-year headwinds are “kind of behind us.” He expects a strong Q4.
Other numbers were weaker. The Ford brand fell about 6%. Lincoln dropped 18%. EV sales fell roughly 80% in the quarter, against record EV sales a year earlier.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Ford Stock
For Ford stock, staying ahead of Hyundai is a small win. It avoids a bad headline. But sales still fell, so the story is mixed.
Ford also pushed back on the comparison. It said Kia and Hyundai run separately in the U.S., even though they share a parent company.
The company’s earnings look better than its sales. In Q2, Ford earned $2.5 billion in adjusted EBIT, up 17%. Strong pricing and a richer vehicle mix drove the gain.
Ford raised its full-year EBIT guidance to $10 billion to $11 billion.

Ford said F-Series was running at about a 45-day supply, which it called very lean.
That suggests room to sell more as production recovers. Management also pointed to Super Duty capacity coming online in Oakville this quarter. That matters for Ford stock.
Risks remain. Commodity costs are rising, and Ford is spending more on new EV and energy projects. Ford stock may keep reacting to F-Series recovery and the Q4 sales report.
