What Happened?

SpaceX (SPCX) is in talks with cellular infrastructure companies to get access to at least 80,000 sites across the U.S. Bloomberg News reported this on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The deals could help SpaceX build a fourth nationwide wireless carrier given that the company is already buying nationwide low-band spectrum.

To put 80,000 sites in context, that is about half of the 158,500 purpose-built cell towers in the U.S. last year.

Crown Castle runs about 40,000 U.S. towers, followed by American Tower, which has about 42,000, while Vertical Bridge owns around 18,000.

Crown Castle’s CEO said the company is talking to “all parties” when asked about SpaceX and Amazon. He did not discuss specific customers.

This fits what SpaceX said on its Q3 call.

Management talked about using small radios on existing Starlink homes, businesses, and towers. It also plans to turn on Starlink Mobile service in early 2028.

The FCC recently approved 15,000 mobile V2 satellites.

What the Market Is Telling Us About SpaceX Stock

The biggest reaction came from the wireless carriers. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile shares fell between 4.2% and 5% in extended trading. Investors seem to think a new national rival is a real threat.

For SpaceX stock, the picture is more mixed. SpaceX is growing fast, as Q3 revenue was $14.6 billion, up 161% from last year, with net income of $4.4 billion.

But building a network costs a lot. TD Cowen estimates a nationwide terrestrial network would cost more than $80 billion, which would also take many years.

Q3 capital spending for SpaceX was $19.6 billion, and management expects $35 billion to $40 billion in Q4.
