What Happened?

Microsoft (MSFT) researchers say they built an AI tool that diagnoses patients step by step, the way doctors do.

A study published on Thursday in ‘Science’ says it was more than twice as accurate as general physicians at solving complex medical cases.

The tool uses an “orchestrator,” which acts like a simulated panel of clinical experts working together.

First, it decides what to ask about the patient’s history. Then it picks which tests to order and reviews the results. It also keeps updating its working hypotheses along the way.

Most existing medical AI looks at all the symptoms, labs, and images at once, while Microsoft’s tool works through the case in stages instead.

The model was tested on more than 300 highly unusual and confusing cases, and the physicians it beat were allowed to use textbooks and the internet.

It also did better than human doctors on scenarios drawn from a major database of emergency room admissions.

The researchers also found that work-ups designed by the orchestrator cost less than those designed by human doctors.

Dr. Dominic King, who leads the health unit at Microsoft AI, said older tests rely on multiple-choice questions. “No patient ever came to see me with a nice summary,” he said.

Next, Microsoft will work with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The team plans to test the tool on triaging patients in emergency department waiting rooms.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Microsoft Stock

The research result is not likely to move Microsoft stock in the near term.

Still, it fits a bigger story. On its latest earnings call, Microsoft said it is on pace to automate over 100 million patient encounters this calendar year.

It also said Dragon Copilot is now used by thousands of providers.

Health care is one small piece of a very large business. In the latest quarter, revenue was $90 billion, up 18% and Microsoft Cloud revenue grew 27%.

For Microsoft stock, the bigger question is spending. Capital expenditures were $41 billion last quarter, and the company expects calendar 2026 spending of about $175 billion.

So this study gives investors another example of how AI could be used in real-world settings.

But the results come from controlled tests. Whether doctors will use this tool in hospitals is still unknown. For now, Microsoft stock is mostly driven by cloud growth and AI spending.
