What Happened?

Rigetti Computing (RGTI) stock is drawing attention after a wave of good news, including a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $100 million in CHIPS Act funding.

That potential deal would support R&D on Rigetti’s superconducting quantum chips and comes alongside a new collaboration with HPE and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to build a hybrid quantum-classical system.

The Q2 numbers also show real momentum. Revenue hit $5.1 million, up from $1.8 million a year ago, driven by on-premises Novera QPU sales.

Gross margin improved to about 43% from 31% a year earlier. That said, losses widened too, with a GAAP net loss of $52.6 million compared to $39.7 million last year, largely due to non-cash warrant and earn-out adjustments.

On a non-GAAP basis, the loss was a more modest $16 million. The company still holds a strong cash position of $541.3 million with no debt, giving it runway to keep investing in its roadmap.

Rigetti Computing stock has been on a remarkable run, up roughly 7.7 times over the past three years. That kind of gain naturally raises the question of how much good news is already priced in.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Rigetti Computing Stock

Market enthusiasm reflects excitement about government-backed quantum programs and Rigetti’s technical progress, including its 108-qubit Cepheus system, one of only three gate-based systems in the world above 100 qubits.

But valuation checks tell a more cautious story. Rigetti Computing stock trades at a price-to-book ratio of about 10.2x, well above both the semiconductor industry average of 4.6x and the peer average of 6.2x.

That split explains the debate happening around Rigetti Computing stock right now. Bulls point to multi-year government and defense contracts, including work with AFRL and continued participation in DARPA’s QBI program, as a path toward more stable, recurring revenue.

Bears argue the stock still prices in many future technical and commercial milestones that haven’t happened yet, calling it roughly fairly valued rather than cheap.

RGTI Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

For now, investors seem willing to pay a premium for Rigetti’s position near the front of the quantum computing race.

But with the company still early in turning research breakthroughs into real, scalable revenue, today’s rally in Rigetti Computing stock is as much a bet on execution as it is a reaction to the news itself.
