What Happened?

nLIGHT (LASR) stock is getting attention after the company landed a major new defense contract. In July 2026, nLIGHT was selected for a Joint Laser Weapon System agreement supporting the U.S. Department of War’s next-generation cruise missile defense program.

The deal starts with a $44 million initial award, but the total program could grow to as much as $627 million if all production options are exercised.

This contract builds directly on nLIGHT’s HADES laser platform, which the company officially launched back in May 2026.

HADES is built around nLIGHT’s own laser technology, from the chips inside to the fiber amplifiers and beam combination systems.

The JLWS award ties that platform to a real, large-scale defense program, which matters because it shows the technology is moving from research work into something the government is ready to fund and eventually deploy.

The timing lines up well with nLIGHT’s recent momentum. In Q1 of 2026, the company posted $80.2 million in revenue, up 55% from a year earlier, driven largely by its aerospace and defense business, which grew 69%.

Product gross margins hit a record 43.6%, and adjusted EBITDA reached a record $13.9 million. The company also strengthened its balance sheet earlier this year, raising over $190 million through a stock offering, leaving it with roughly $330 million in cash heading into this new contract.

LASR Stock Revenue and EBIT Estimates in Billion USD

For Q2, nLIGHT expects revenue between $75 million and $81 million, with continued growth from its defense segment.

Looking further out, the company’s current narrative projects revenue of $454.9 million and earnings of $8.2 million by 2029.

Before this new contract, some of the more optimistic estimates had already pegged 2029 revenue near $463.9 million with earnings of $35.3 million, so the JLWS win adds real weight to that bullish case.

What the Market Is Telling Us About nLIGHT Stock

The reaction in nLIGHT stock reflects a simple idea: this is a big vote of confidence from the U.S. government in nLIGHT’s laser weapon technology.

A program ceiling of $627 million is a meaningful number for a company of this size, and it validates years of investment in coherent beam combining and high-power laser systems.

LASR Stock Street Target (TIKR)

At the same time, the market seems to understand this raises the stakes.

More reliance on defense contracts means nLIGHT stock could become more sensitive to how government budgets and program timelines play out.

Still, with record margins, growing cash reserves, and a contract of this scale now in hand, investors appear to see nLIGHT stock as a company whose defense bet is starting to pay off.
