What Happened?
Nike (NKE) stock is in focus after the company announced it will cut off thousands of online distributors in China starting in January.
Going forward, Nike’s digital presence in the region will center on its own website and app, plus one official flagship store each on Tmall, JD.com, and Douyin.
Right now, consumers can buy Nike products through those platforms and thousands of other online storefronts run by brick-and-mortar partners and secondary distributors.
Nike says that setup has created inconsistent pricing and branding, and it wants a cleaner, more controlled experience.
Cathy Sparks, Nike’s new VP and general manager for Greater China, described the goal as reducing fragmentation rather than reducing access.
She said the new flagship stores will offer clearer product presentation and a more consistent brand experience across the platforms where Chinese consumers already shop.
This move comes as Greater China remains one of Nike’s toughest markets. In Q4, revenue in the region fell 17%, with digital sales down 25% and wholesale down 19%. Sales in Greater China have dropped roughly 30% over the past five years.
Still, there were some bright spots. Running grew mid-single digits in the quarter, and Nike’s flagship House of Innovation store in Shanghai posted double-digit growth, showing that premium, well-executed retail experiences are still resonating with shoppers.

Not everyone is convinced this is the right move for Nike stock.
- BNP Paribas analyst Laurent Vasilescu compared it to Nike’s earlier decision to cut wholesalers in North America, a move that backfired and opened shelf space for competitors while hurting Nike’s own sales and margins.
- Vasilescu kept his underperform rating, arguing Nike’s real issue is product, not distribution.
Topsports, Nike’s largest distributor in mainland China, backed the plan despite expecting short-term pain, saying it should lead to a healthier, more sustainable retail environment over time.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Nike Stock
This decision shows Nike is willing to take near-term revenue risk in China to fix pricing control and brand consistency long term.
For Nike stock, the bet is that a cleaner digital marketplace eventually rebuilds trust and full-price sales, even if some partners lose ground in the short run.

Given the North America wholesale cutback didn’t go as planned, investors will likely watch closely to see whether Nike stock benefits from this China strategy or repeats past mistakes in a market that’s already been shrinking for years.
