Why Micron Stock’s 206% Run Reflects an AI Memory Shortage

MU Stock Price: Year to Date (TIKR)

Micron Technology (MU) stock has climbed 206.5% since early January, closing at $966.78 on August 21 after tagging highs near $1,225 in July. The move traces to a physical bottleneck, not a narrative. AI data centers need far more DRAM and NAND than the industry can currently produce, and Micron sits at the center of that shortfall.

The fiscal third quarter results, reported June 24, made the scarcity tangible. Revenue hit a record $41.5 billion, up 74% sequentially and 346% year over year, with gross margin jumping to 84.9% and operating margin reaching 81.2%. Non-GAAP earnings per share came in at $25.11, and Micron guided fiscal fourth-quarter revenue to $50 billion with EPS near $31. Behind those numbers sit 16 strategic customer agreements, multiyear take-or-pay contracts worth roughly $100 billion in minimum committed revenue and $22 billion in customer cash deposits, that lock in demand through 2030.

Sumit Sadana, Micron’s chief business officer, described the constraint bluntly at KeyBanc’s Technology Leadership Forum on August 10. Customers across the board, he said, keep landing on the same answer when asked what is holding back their AI buildouts: “The #1 constraint they have today, and this is not just 1 or 2 customers, but a common theme across our customers is not power or real estate or data center capacity or logic wafers. The #1 constraint they have is DRAM.” That single sentence explains why Micron stock has outrun a semiconductor sector that is itself up sharply this year. Scarcity, not sentiment, is compounding the company’s earnings power right alongside its share price.

Micron’s $10 Billion Boise Lab Signals a Multi-Decade AI Bet

The run is not only a near-term supply story. On August 20, Micron unveiled a $10 billion Boise research facility, part of a decade-long investment layered on top of the more than $250 billion the company has already committed to U.S. manufacturing and R&D. Groundbreaking is set for 2027, well past the current shortage window.

That timeline matters because Sadana framed robotics and physical AI, not data centers, as the next demand wave, noting humanoid robots are expected to carry roughly ten times the memory of an average advanced driver-assistance vehicle. The Boise lab is Micron positioning for that wave before it arrives, reinforcing the case that this year’s rally is an early chapter rather than a peak.

Micron Stock’s Coverage Swells to 44 Analysts With Bullish Targets

Micron stock now carries 44 published price targets, up from 33 in May 2025, split into 34 buys, 9 outperforms, 4 holds, 1 underperform and 1 sell. The mean target sits at $1,515, 57% above the $967 close, with a median of $1,545 and a high mark of $2,200.

That current gap is a reversal from where the Street stood earlier this year. In February, the mean target of $389 sat 6% below the $416 close. By late May, the gap widened further: the mean target of $674 trailed the $924 price by 27%, the steepest shortfall in the table’s history. Analysts were still catching up to Micron stock’s climb.

By August, that reversed hard, with the mean target vaulting 57% above the price instead of trailing it. The Street stopped chasing the rally and started pricing in the DRAM shortage Sadana described, arguing the run still has room.

TIKR Values Micron Stock at $1,531 Through August 2030

TIKR’s mid-case model values Micron Technology at $1,531 by August 2030, implying 58% total return from the current price of $967, or 12% annualized over roughly four years.

Micron stock’s NTM price-to-earnings ratio has actually compressed to 6.72x, well below its trailing mean of 9.44x and its 15.30x high from last November, even as the share price nearly tripled since then. That gap confirms the 206% run has been an earnings story rather than a re-rating, with consensus estimates climbing faster than the stock did. It leaves TIKR’s 12% annualized path looking conservative rather than cautious, since the model isn’t even assuming the multiple recovers toward its own mean.

The model’s more measured trajectory lines up with a Street that has pushed its own mean target to $1,515, just above TIKR’s figure, with both readings betting that DRAM scarcity outlasts the earnings acceleration already priced into Micron stock today.
