What Happened?

Micron Technology (MU) used part of its October 21 technology webinar to explain why memory stays scarce even as it builds more. Scott DeBoer, President and Chief Technology and Products Officer, said the AI memory products on Micron’s roadmap need progressively more wafers per bit. The stock closed at $913.67 that day, up 1.96% as memory stocks broadly gained, and sits 24.71% below its peak on TIKR’s drawdown chart.

Every New AI Memory Chip Eats More Wafers

The trade ratio measures how many wafers it takes to make a bit of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) versus a bit of standard DRAM. DeBoer said it rises from HBM to vertical HBM, which sits directly on top of the processor, and on to vertical memory for edge devices. “So that pressure remains through this road map,” he said. Vertical HBM also needs far more connections, which cuts the number of chips each wafer yields.

That keeps supply tight, but it also raises the build-out bill for Micron’s most advanced products. TIKR shows consensus fiscal 2027 capital spending at around $55 billion, up from $30.71 billion in fiscal 2026.

Labor risk in Taiwan also narrowed. On October 21, Micron signed an agreement with the union at its Taichung operations, its largest Taiwan site, without disclosing terms. Talks with a separate Taoyuan union ended without a deal, and its 24-hour strike began October 22 with 11 union officials taking part, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.

Micron’s Answer to CXMT Is Bigger Modules, Not 4F²

China’s CXMT (688825) has announced plans to launch server memory by year-end using 4F², a denser DRAM cell layout, without disclosing specifications or customers. TIKR covered that threat on October 13. DeBoer, who said Micron invented 4F², argued that capacitor pitch, not cell layout, sets density. He conceded 4F² can be built a few nodes back at higher cost, but said that scaling it further comes down to “physics.”

Micron’s own server roadmap leans on capacity. It has sampled what DeBoer called the world’s first 512-gigabyte DDR5 server module, with a 1-terabyte version next. Its 1-delta DRAM node targets a mid-20s percentage density gain and Gen11 NAND targets double Gen9’s density, both ramping in the second half of 2027.

TIKR shows CXMT at around 11 times next-twelve-month earnings, versus about 5 for Micron and 3 for SK hynix (000660).

Micron Advanced Valuation Model (TIKR)

The mid case is measured from the $913.67 close and sits below Wall Street’s shorter-dated mean target of ~$1,561.The model’s 10-year forecast table (2026 to 2036) assumes around 11% annual revenue growth, a net margin near 61% versus a 65% normalized margin in fiscal 2026, and a shrinking earnings multiple.

The pushback came from Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya, who noted some put memory at “half or more of the bill of materials” and asked whether customers would trim it. DeBoer answered that “more memory does equal better system performance.” Tesla has already cut RAM on its AI chips. If more buyers economize, the mid case looks optimistic.

Conclusion

SK hynix, which also makes HBM, holds its third-quarter earnings call on October 28. Confirmation that its 2027 HBM capacity is committed would support DeBoer’s view across the industry. Any sign of spare HBM capacity would weaken it before Micron’s next report in December.
