Key Takeaways
- MSC Industrial shares fell 14% today, even though fiscal fourth-quarter sales hit a record $1.08 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.45 beat estimates.
- Management’s first-quarter outlook calls for an adjusted operating margin of 9.5% to 10.1%, which is lower than the fourth quarter’s 10.9%.
- That outlook is still well above the 8.4% margin from a year earlier, but the stock went into the report trading near its five-year high on forward earnings.
- The next test is MSC’s first-quarter report on Jan. 6, 2027, and whether the margin holds near 10% as inflation bites.
MSC Industrial Direct (MSM) just posted record quarterly sales and beat Wall Street’s earnings estimates. The stock is down 14% today anyway.
What MSC Reported
MSC reported its fiscal fourth quarter (ended Aug. 29) before the open today:
- Net sales rose 10.3% to a record $1.08 billion.
- Adjusted operating margin hit 10.9%, above the top of MSC’s own outlook.
- Adjusted EPS jumped 33% to $1.45.
- GAAP EPS fell 15.8% to $0.85 (on a $41.8 million asset impairment charge).
CEO Martina McIsaac said core customer growth of about 10% was “our strongest in more than three years.” But she added: “While we remain mindful of inflationary headwinds and tougher comparisons looking ahead, we are confident that profitable growth will remain the trend.”
The Margin Is the Catch
For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, MSC guided for average daily sales growth of 9.5% to 10.5% and an adjusted operating margin of 9.5% to 10.1%, a step down from the fourth quarter’s 10.9%.
Still, that outlook sits well above the 8.4% adjusted margin MSC posted a year earlier. And there’s ground left to win back: its adjusted operating margin slid from 12.9% in fiscal 2022 to 8.4% in fiscal 2025.

Analysts expect normalized EPS to climb to $5.53 in fiscal 2027 and $6.39 in fiscal 2028, from an adjusted $4.69 in fiscal 2026. With daily sales guided to grow about 10%, nothing in this outlook looks likely to force big cuts to those numbers.

MSC Stock Was Priced for More Than a Beat
The trouble is the price. Shares were up about 55% in 2026 through yesterday’s close, and MSC traded at 25x forward earnings, just shy of its five-year high of 26x and well above its 18x average. At today’s price, it’s closer to 21x.

Today’s drop lets some air out of a stock that had run ahead of a real turnaround. But 21x is still above MSC’s five-year average, so the margin has to hold before this looks like a bargain.
The next check comes Jan. 6, 2027, when MSC reports its first quarter. A margin at the top of that 9.5% to 10.1% range would go a long way.
