What Happened?
Meta (META), TikTok and X are pushing back against Ofcom, Britain’s online safety regulator. The fight is over how much information Ofcom wants them to hand over.
It is one of the first challenges under the 2023 Online Safety Act. The law sets tougher rules for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X.
Its goal is to protect children from harmful and illegal content. The most serious breaches can lead to fines of up to 10% of a company’s global turnover.
In February, Ofcom sent information notices asking for detailed content moderation data. That includes how many posts were removed or had their reach limited. It also covers how many users saw harmful content.
The companies say the demands are too heavy. X called it “the most burdensome information request X has received from any regulator in any jurisdiction.”
Meta said Ofcom wants “wide-ranging and granular information” on seven of its services, with no clear purpose.
TikTok said Ofcom skipped an alternative monitoring system that has its own safeguards.

Ofcom disagrees. It says it needs the data to check whether the new rules are working. It also says it narrowed the request before putting it in place.
The hearing ends on Wednesday. Next week, Meta is expected to bring a separate case. It covers how fees and penalties are calculated.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Meta Stock
This is a regulatory story, not a business update. No ruling has been made yet. Meta stock may get some attention this week, but the real test is the court’s decision.
Meta’s business looks strong. In Q2, revenue grew 28% to $60.8 billion. Ad revenue reached $59.4 billion, up 27%. Earnings per share came in at $6.18.
Costs are also climbing. Total expenses rose 55%, including $2.4 billion in legal charges. Management also warned that youth-related trials this year could lead to a material loss.

That makes this case worth watching. Anyone following Meta stock will want to see how the hearing goes and whether the fee case brings more pressure.
