What Happened?

Meta’s (META) new Muse AI personal agent app has only been live for about two weeks, and it’s already the top free app on Apple’s iOS store in the U.S. Muse overtook OpenAI’s ChatGPT for the top spot on Friday.

It also pulled ahead of Anthropic’s Claude, SpaceX’s Grok, and even Meta’s own Meta AI app.

The numbers back up the buzz.

According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, Muse pulled in 730,000 downloads in its first five days after launching on September 8.

By Monday, that total had climbed past 2.5 million downloads across iOS and Android combined, with roughly 1.5 million on iOS and 1.1 million on Android.

For comparison, Claude logged 400,000 downloads, and Grok logged 200,000 over that same 13-day stretch.

ChatGPT still led the pack with 3.1 million downloads in that window, but Muse’s early climb has clearly gotten Wall Street’s attention.

Meta built Muse as a way for regular people to direct AI agents that can handle tasks like filling out online forms or organizing an email inbox.

It runs on Meta’s Muse Spark family of AI models.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon told CNBC that most agentic AI tools so far haven’t been built for everyday users, but Muse looks like an attempt to change that.

Investors reacted fast. Meta Platforms stock surged more than 11% on Monday, and Wells Fargo raised its price target on Meta Platforms stock to $796.

Meta is offering Muse for free, but also selling monthly subscriptions priced at $20 or $100 depending on usage.

That gives the company a potential new revenue stream outside its core advertising business.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Meta Stock

The launch isn’t without friction.

Amazon has blocked Muse from accessing its shopping site, saying the agent bypasses built-in personalization features and appears to capture and store customer login credentials without permission.

Shopify, meanwhile, is leaning in. CEO Tobias Lütke announced Monday that Shopify is partnering with Meta to allow agentic checkout directly in its online stores.

There’s also a broader backdrop.

Meta recently agreed to pay roughly $17 billion to settle claims from state attorneys general over alleged harms to children and teens from its apps.

And the Muse launch comes as the tech industry faces growing questions about AI safety and cybersecurity.

Still, Monday’s move in Meta Platforms stock shows investors are focused on the upside right now.

Whether Muse turns into a lasting hit or fades like some past AI app launches remains to be seen.

But for now, the download numbers and the stock’s reaction both point to real momentum behind Meta Platforms stock heading into the back half of the year.
