What Happened?
Meta Platforms (META) is delaying its updated commercial terms as the company said on Friday it needs more time to address concerns from publishers and digital advertisers. The move could head off regulatory action.
The new terms were due to start on October 30, but will now take effect on November 20, and Meta says the extra time will help it explain “what’s changing and what’s not.”
EU and UK antitrust authorities received complaints about the terms. Publishers and advertisers say the terms would give Meta an unlimited right to use their content for its AI services, even as the social media giant rejects that claim.
Meta says it will explain how it uses web crawlers and also says content owners can still use robots.txt to signal their preferences to crawlers and AI bots.

The European Commission welcomed the delay and also said it has sent information requests to companies that have not yet published summaries of the data used to train their AI models.
The European Publishers Council was not satisfied, and it wants regulators to suspend the terms during an investigation.
Its director, Angela Mills Wade, said running a business page should not give general rights over a publisher’s website and archive.
