What Happened?
Lumentum (LITE) had a sharp drop on Wednesday, falling about 9% to close at $938. The slide had little to do with the company itself.
Instead, the whole group of optical networking stocks pulled back at the same time.
The sell-off came right after a big rally. In the prior session, optical names jumped on excitement about AI and data center spending. Coherent rose 17% and Lumentum gained nearly 14%.
After two strong days in a row, investors decided to cash out and lock in profits. By Wednesday, Coherent was down almost 3%, and Lumentum stock was off more than 8%.

The earlier pop was sparked by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
He talked up demand for optical networking parts, which sent money flowing into the entire space. When a trade runs that hot that fast, a pullback is pretty normal.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Lumentum Stock
This looks like profit-taking, not a warning sign about the business. Lumentum stock has been one of the hottest names of 2026.
It is up roughly 140% so far this year, joined the S&P 500 in March, and was added to the Nasdaq-100 in May. A one-day drop after a run like that is not surprising.
The fundamentals are still strong.
- In its most recent quarter, Lumentum grew revenue 90% from a year ago to a record $808 million, and earnings came in well ahead of expectations.
- Profit margins jumped sharply, too.
- Management guided to another record quarter ahead.
- On top of that, Nvidia made a $2 billion direct investment in the company, underscoring how central Lumentum is to AI infrastructure.
Wall Street is still upbeat. The average analyst price target is just above $1,100, about 18% above where Lumentum stock trades now. Several firms raised their targets after the last earnings report.

That said, this is a volatile stock.
Lumentum stock swings hard in both directions, so days like this come with the territory. The valuation is rich after such a big run, which means the shares can drop quickly when traders pull money off the table.
For now, this looks like the market catching its breath, not changing its mind.
