What Happened?
Costco (COST) stock barely moved after the company reported a solid Q2 that beat expectations on both sales and profit.
- Net income rose nearly 14% to $2.04 billion.
- Same-store sales, excluding gas, grew 6.7%, ahead of the 5.88% analysts were expecting.
- The membership business was a clear highlight. Membership fee revenue jumped 13.6% year-over-year to $1.355 billion.
- The company now has 82.1 million paid members, up nearly 5% from last year.
- Executive memberships, which cost more but come with added perks, grew even faster at 9.5%.
- Digital sales were another bright spot. E-commerce comparable sales surged 22.6% in the quarter.
- Personalized product recommendations alone drove over $470 million in online sales during Q2.

On tariffs, CEO Ron Vachris said Costco has already cut prices on items like textiles, bedding, and cookware following the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Trump’s emergency tariffs.
If Costco receives any refunds from tariffs paid last year, Vachris said the company would pass that value back to members through lower prices.
Costco stock was largely flat after hours. The muted reaction isn’t surprising. The stock trades at a premium valuation, so investors generally need more than a solid quarter to push it higher.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Costco Stock
Costco stock continues to be seen as a safe haven. With consumers across income levels focused on value, Costco’s model is well-suited for the current environment.
Its private-label brand, Kirkland Signature, is gaining traction as shoppers seek cheaper alternatives to national brands.

The tariff situation adds some uncertainty, but Costco looks better positioned than most.
Its limited SKU count and global buying scale give it more flexibility to absorb cost changes or shift sourcing. Management sounded confident on the call that supply chains are stable heading into spring.
For long-term investors, membership growth and digital momentum matter most. Both are moving in the right direction. Costco stock may not be cheap, but the underlying business keeps delivering.
