The Starbucks Rumor Fizzled, and Chipotle Is Back to Basics
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) shares fell about 1.7% over the past week to roughly $30, just above their 52-week low of $28. The week’s main story was a takeover rumor that came and went. A media report said Starbucks had worked with advisers on a possible bid, but a Starbucks spokesperson then said the company is not buying Chipotle. Shares fell nearly 4% after the denial, erasing much of the rumor-driven gain.
With deal talk gone, attention returns to traffic and margins. Q2 revenue rose 9.3% to $3.35 billion, and comparable restaurant sales, which track stores open more than a year, grew 2.2%. That came from a 1.2% higher average check and 1.0% more transactions. Digital orders reached 38.3% of food and beverage revenue.
Costs are the problem. Operating margin fell to 15.7% from 18.2%, while restaurant-level margin, the profit each store earns before corporate overhead, dropped to 25.2% from 27.4%. CEO Scott Boatwright pointed to “the momentum we’re building as our Recipe for Growth strategy continues to take shape.” That plan centers on menu innovation, Chipotle Rewards, hospitality, and catering.
Analysts also expect a cyclospora drag in Q3, after an outbreak of the foodborne parasite slowed industry traffic in late July. Management said the outbreak did not involve Chipotle products. If CMG stock is going to climb back toward $43, the October 28 report must show traffic holding up anyway.

Chipotle’s Multiple Has Been Cut in Half

Under valuation model assumptions realized through 12/31/28, the stock is modeled using:
- Revenue Growth (CAGR): 10.1%
- Operating Margins: 15.4%
- Exit P/E Multiple: 23.6x
Based on these inputs, the model estimates a target price of $41, implying a 37.5% total return from the current share price of $30 and an annualized return of 15.5% over the next 2.2 years.
This is a valuation reset story. Chipotle averaged about 47.7x earnings over the past decade and 41.1x over five years. Today it trades near 23.6x forward earnings, meaning investors pay about $24 for each $1 of next year’s expected profit. So the stock no longer needs to win back its old premium to deliver returns.

Margin assumptions look cautious. The model’s 15.4% operating margin sits just below Q2’s 15.7% and the 17.1% earned over the past year. That leaves room for upside if beef and freight costs ease. Revenue growth of 10.1% is close to analysts’ 10.0% two-year forecast, and 350 to 370 new restaurants this year drive much of it.
A 15.5% annual return clears the threshold for a genuinely undervalued stock. However, the math depends on comparable sales recovering rather than lingering near 1%. Fast-casual peers like CAVA Group (CAVA) are growing traffic far faster, which raises the bar on Chipotle’s execution.

CAVA Is Winning on Traffic, While Sweetgreen Shows the Downside
CAVA Group (CAVA) is the fastest-growing rival in Chipotle’s fast-casual lane. In its latest quarter, CAVA grew same restaurant sales 9.0%, including 5.3% traffic growth. Chipotle managed 2.2% comps with just 1.0% transaction growth. CAVA’s total revenue rose 31.3% to $365.4 million, versus 9.3% at Chipotle.
Margins tell a different story. CAVA’s restaurant-level margin was 25.7%, only half a point above Chipotle’s 25.2%. That near-parity stands out because Chipotle earns it on roughly nine times more revenue. Scale still gives Chipotle buying power on beef, avocados, and freight.
Sweetgreen (SG) shows how bad things can get when traffic fades. Its same-store sales fell 6.2%, and restaurant-level margin collapsed to 13.1% from 18.9%. It also posted an operating loss equal to 14.2% of revenue. Against that backdrop, Chipotle’s 15.7% operating margin looks resilient, and its moat remains throughput, digital ordering, and a loyal rewards base.

What’s Driving CMG Stock Going Forward?
The Q3 report on October 28 is the immediate catalyst. Management guided comparable sales to about 1%, below Q2’s 2.2% pace. Full-year guidance still calls for low-single-digit comp growth and 350 to 370 new restaurants. A traffic miss would likely matter more than an earnings miss.
Margin direction is the second test. Beef and freight costs continue to pressure restaurant-level margin, and UBS expects roughly in-line comps but warns Q4 margins could fall below consensus. Any sign of relief would support the model’s 15.4% assumption. Management, meanwhile, has focused on value perception rather than aggressive price hikes.
International expansion and group orders round out the plan. Chipotle expects 10 to 15 new international partner-operated restaurants this year, where local partners run daily operations. It is also pushing catering to serve more group occasions, which adds sales without new stores. With the Starbucks noise gone, these drivers now carry the stock on their own.
