MercadoLibre Doubles Down on Speed in Brazil

MercadoLibre (MELI) shares fell about 3.1% over the past week to roughly $1,834, leaving the stock 24% below its 52-week high. The pullback came even after election results lifted Brazil’s stock exchange to a record in early October. Investors are not doubting the growth. Instead, they are questioning how long margins stay under pressure.

The latest move is a speed play. MercadoLibre launched deliveries within one hour in São Paulo for items up to 15 kilograms, including food and medications. It also began selling prescription medicines through its own São Paulo pharmacy and targets 20 partner locations by year-end. Timing matters here, since Sea’s Shopee launched four-hour delivery in Brazil in August.

Q2 results show the trade-off clearly. Net revenue jumped 50% to $10.2 billion, topping $10 billion for the first time. However, operating income fell 17% to $683 million, and operating margin compressed 5.5 percentage points to 6.7%. Net income dropped 11% to $466 million, marking a third straight quarter of year-over-year declines.

CEO Ariel Szarfsztejn described AI as “accelerating the secular shift we already are trying to capture,” pointing to better search and lending decisions. The company also raised $1 billion in 10-year notes at a coupon near 5.9%, which strengthens liquidity for logistics and credit growth. Going forward, MELI stock likely hinges on whether Q3 shows margins stabilizing while growth stays above 40%.

Margins Are the Whole Valuation Debate

MELI Guided Valuation Model (TIKR)

Under valuation model assumptions realized through 12/31/28, the stock is modeled using:

  • Revenue Growth (CAGR): 32.4%
  • Operating Margins: 8.3%
  • Exit P/E Multiple: 40.6x

Based on these inputs, the model estimates a target price of $3,846, implying a 109.7% total return from the current share price of $1,834 and an annualized return of 39.8% over the next 2.2 years.

This is a margin compression story with a recovery bet attached. MercadoLibre’s operating margin was 12.7% over the past year in the model, but Q2 slipped to 6.7% as free shipping and credit spending ramped up. The model assumes 8.3%, which equals the trailing margin today. So the forecast needs no full rebound, just no further damage.

MELI Guided Valuation Model (TIKR)

Growth assumptions look conservative against the company’s record. Revenue grew 39.1% over the last year and 48.7% annually over five years, while analysts expect about 36.9% over the next two years. The model’s 32.4% input therefore leaves a cushion. Mercado Pago’s credit book, up 75% to $16.4 billion, keeps feeding that top line.

The 40.6x exit multiple matches the past year’s P/E and sits well below the 64.3x five-year average. Today’s forward P/E, the price paid for each $1 of next year’s expected profit, is near 43.5x. That means the model actually assumes slight compression. A 39.8% annual return is exceptional, but it depends on the investment cycle paying off while Sea Limited (SE) keeps pricing pressure on Brazil.

Shopee Is Chasing MercadoLibre Into Brazil

Sea Limited (SE), owner of Shopee, is MercadoLibre’s most aggressive rival in Brazil. Sea’s Q2 revenue rose 48.1% to $7.8 billion, nearly matching MercadoLibre’s 50% growth. Shopee’s gross merchandise volume (GMV), the total value of goods sold, grew 28.4% to $38.3 billion. Sea’s management also called Brazil its fastest-growing market in the quarter.

Fintech is a head-to-head race too. Sea’s lending arm, Monee, grew revenue 58.9% to $1.4 billion, with loans outstanding up 62.5% to $11.1 billion. Mercado Pago’s credit portfolio is larger at $16.4 billion and growing faster at 75%. That lead gives MercadoLibre more data to price risk, which supports credit margins.

Profitability shows where the money goes. Shopee earned $255.4 million in adjusted EBITDA on $5.6 billion of revenue, a margin of roughly 4.6%. Although the measures differ, MercadoLibre’s 6.7% operating margin remains higher even after this year’s spending. Amazon (AMZN) also competes in Brazil and Mexico, yet MercadoLibre’s moat is its owned logistics network, which delivered 77% of fast shipments in Brazil within 48 hours.

What’s Driving MELI Stock Going Forward?

Q3 results on November 2 come first. Investors want to see whether operating margin holds near Q2’s 6.7% or slips again. The Q2 shareholder letter described the squeeze as a deliberate choice to reinvest efficiency gains into the customer offer. So any commentary on shipping subsidies will matter as much as revenue.

Brazil’s quick commerce push is the near-term swing factor. One-hour delivery and pharmacy sales increase how often customers open the app, which lifts order frequency and advertising value. These services also require more fulfillment centers and couriers, so costs arrive before revenue. Past cuts to seller shipping fees in 2024 and 2025 followed the same pattern and strengthened engagement.

Credit remains the profit engine. Net interest margin after losses, a measure of lending profit after bad loans, improved from 18% in Q1 to 21% in Q2. Mercado Pago is also expanding its credit card business despite concerns about Brazilian consumer debt. Fresh bond funding gives MercadoLibre room to keep growing that book through 2027.
