A Growth Downshift Is Testing Zscaler’s Premium

Zscaler (ZS) shares fell about 8.1% over the past week, closing Friday near $207 after a 5.9% drop in the final session. The slide came without any change to guidance. Instead, investors appear to be rethinking how much to pay for growth that is cooling from 25% toward 17%. That tension has followed the stock since its fiscal Q4 report in early September.

Zscaler sells cloud security that connects users directly to apps without putting them on a corporate network, a model known as Zero Trust. In fiscal Q4, revenue and annual recurring revenue (ARR), the yearly value of subscription contracts, both grew 25%. ARR reached $3.8 billion, and the non-GAAP operating margin hit a record 24%. Non-GAAP figures strip out items like stock-based pay.

“AI represents one of the most significant opportunities in Zscaler’s history,” said CEO Jay Chaudhry. However, fiscal 2027 guidance calls for revenue growth of only 16.6% to 17.5%. Free cash flow also dipped to 7% of revenue in Q4 because capital spending nearly tripled to $219 million. Management reaffirmed its outlook at the October investor day, yet that reassurance has not stopped the selling.

Recent headlines leaned on threat research rather than new numbers. ThreatLabz, Zscaler’s research unit, found ransomware data theft rose 275% year over year to 896 terabytes. The company also partnered with IBM and Red Hat to shield private apps before security patches arrive, but neither update came with a revenue figure. Going forward, ZS stock likely needs proof that AI security products can slow the deceleration.

Zscaler’s Multiple Has Already Done the Hard Reset

ZS Guided Valuation Model (TIKR)

Under valuation model assumptions realized through 7/31/29, the stock is modeled using:

  • Revenue Growth (CAGR): 16.7%
  • Operating Margins: 24.9%
  • Exit P/E Multiple: 42.3x

Based on these inputs, the model estimates a target price of $312, implying a 50.7% total return from the current share price of $207 and an annualized return of 15.8% over the next 2.8 years.

This is a multiple re-rating story more than a growth collapse. Three years ago, investors paid about 118x earnings for Zscaler, and last year that figure was near 45.5x. Today the stock trades around 42x forward earnings, meaning investors pay $42 for each $1 of next year’s expected profit. So the model’s 42.3x exit simply holds the current multiple flat.

Revenue assumptions look reasonable against management’s own targets. The 16.7% input sits inside fiscal 2027 guidance, while analysts expect about 16.9% over the next two years. Margins are the bigger lever, because the model’s normalized margin was 21.7% over the past year. Reaching 24.9% requires steady cost discipline as AI products scale.

CrowdStrike just grew revenue 26% in its latest quarter, well ahead of Zscaler’s guided pace. That gap justifies some discount, but a 42x multiple already reflects much of it. A 15.8% annual return clears the bar for a genuinely undervalued stock, although investors will want free cash flow margins back near the guided 23% range.

CrowdStrike Is Growing Faster, but Zscaler Owns the Network Edge

CrowdStrike (CRWD) is Zscaler’s closest public rival in AI-era security, and the trailing numbers look surprisingly similar. CrowdStrike’s fiscal Q2 revenue rose 26% to $1.47 billion, while ARR climbed 25% to $5.84 billion. Zscaler grew both revenue and ARR 25% in its own latest quarter. Margins also line up, with CrowdStrike’s non-GAAP operating margin near 25.3% versus Zscaler’s record 24%.

The split shows up in direction. CrowdStrike accelerated from 21% revenue growth a year earlier to 26% now. Zscaler, by contrast, is guiding to roughly 17% growth in fiscal 2027. That gap explains why investors treat CrowdStrike as the momentum name and Zscaler as the reset.

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) adds pressure from a different angle. It bundles firewalls, cloud security, and SASE tools, which combine networking and security in one cloud service. Large customers who want fewer vendors may lean toward that bundle. However, Zscaler’s moat is its cloud-native scale, since it inspects enterprise traffic without on-site hardware, and it holds about $1.6 billion more cash than debt to keep investing.

What’s Driving ZS Stock Going Forward?

Fiscal Q1 results, expected around November 25, are the next checkpoint. Management guided to revenue of $935 million to $939 million, up about 19%, with a 23% operating margin. Non-GAAP EPS should land at $1.15 to $1.16. An ARR beat would matter more than a revenue beat, because ARR signals future billings.

Full-year guidance sets the bigger frame. Zscaler expects ARR of $4.40 billion to $4.43 billion, up 16.6% to 17.4%, and non-GAAP EPS of $4.86 to $4.90. It also targets a free cash flow margin of 23% to 23.5%. That means roughly 23 cents of every revenue dollar would turn into spendable cash.

Product expansion is the swing factor. In September, Zscaler launched an Agentic SOC platform, which uses AI to automate the work of a security operations center. Its research shows AI helping attackers move faster, so demand for data protection should stay firm. If new products push ARR growth back toward 20%, today’s multiple could prove conservative.
