Chipotle Stock Posted Positive Transaction Growth in Q1 While Investing Margins Into Long-Term Demand

CMG Stock Q1 2026 Earnings in USD (TIKR)

Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) reported Q1 FY26 revenue of $3.1 billion, up 7.4% year-over-year, with comparable restaurant sales rising 0.5% on the first positive transaction growth the company has delivered since mid-2024.

That transaction turn came despite a January winter storm that shuttered roughly half of Chipotle’s 4,100 restaurants for several days, costing an estimated 100 basis points of comp.

What drove the recovery was a sharper innovation cadence: the high-protein menu campaign, the return of Chicken al Pastor, and the launch of Cilantro Lime Sauce, which outperformed every prior sauce offering at 2x the incidence rate of Red Chimichurri.

Behind the menu hits, the high-efficiency equipment package (dual-sided plancha, 3-pan rice cooker, high-capacity fryer) reached 600 restaurants in the quarter, up from 350 the prior period. CEO Scott Boatwright addressed the equipment’s impact directly on the Q1 earnings call: “What we’re seeing right now is outperformance on throughput, taste of food, OSAT, and then again hundreds of basis points of comp lift in those restaurants.” Management targets 2,000 installations by year-end, with the full system complete by late 2027 or early 2028.

Still, Chipotle stock carries a margin overhang. Adjusted restaurant-level margin fell 250 basis points year-over-year to 23.7% as the company ran just 0.9% price against roughly 4% industry inflation. CFO Adam Rymer framed the gap as deliberate: an investment in the value proposition while consumer sentiment stays weak.

That pricing discipline preserves long-term demand but compresses near-term EBITDA, which fell 12% year-over-year to $510 million. The question for Chipotle stock is how fast the transaction tailwinds from equipment, LTOs, and catering compound into earnings power as pricing gradually steps up through the back half.

25 of 36 Analysts Rate Chipotle Stock a Buy, With a $43 Mean Target

Street Analysts Target for CMG Stock (TIKR)

Of the 36 analysts covering Chipotle stock, 25 rate it a buy or outperform, 10 hold, one has no opinion, and zero recommend selling. The consensus mean target of $43 sits 29% above the current $33 price, with estimates ranging from $35 at the low end to $52 at the high.

J.P. Morgan’s June 5 upgrade to overweight reinforced the buy-side lean, though Morgan Stanley moved the opposite direction on June 3, cutting to equal-weight with a $37 target on slower margin recovery concerns.

Wall Street Expects Chipotle Stock’s EBITDA to Reaccelerate 19% by March 2027

CMG Stock EBITDA and EBITDA Margins Trajectory (TIKR)

Chipotle posted Q1 EBITDA of $510 million on a 16.6% margin, down from $670 million and 21.8% a year earlier.

Consensus expects the contraction to bottom quickly. The Street projects EBITDA of $630 million for the June 2026 quarter, still 5% below the prior year, but the year-over-year trajectory flips positive in September at +2% and accelerates through December (+10%) and March 2027 (+19%).

EBITDA margins follow the same arc. After bottoming at 17% in December 2025, margins recovered to 19% by March 2026, and consensus projects them reaching 20% by June 2027 as pricing steps closer to inflation and transaction growth compounds.

Whether that curve holds depends on how fast Chipotle closes its pricing gap. Management guided 1% to 2% for the full year against roughly 4% cost-of-sales inflation, and if the step-ups stall, EBITDA recovery flattens even as transactions improve.

TIKR’s $65 Target on Chipotle Stock Holds If EBITDA Reacceleration Follows the Transaction Turn

TIKR’s mid-case model values Chipotle stock at $65 by December 2030, implying 94% total return from the current price of $33, or 16% annualized over 4.5 years.

CMG Stock Valuation Model Results (TIKR)

That 16% annualized return prices Chipotle well above the broader market but below the company’s own 10-year total return of 315%.

The path to $65 runs through the EBITDA recovery the Street already models: pricing that narrows the gap to inflation while transaction growth from the equipment rollout and LTO cadence compounds. With 2,000 stores on the new equipment by December and catering scaling toward a national launch in 2027, the building blocks sit inside management’s control rather than depending on a macro rebound.
