What Happened?
“We’re not going to give a specific WFE forecast today,” Applied Materials (AMAT) CEO Gary Dickerson told investors at the company’s SEMICON West breakfast on Oct. 13, 2026. He followed it with “tremendous confidence” that computing demand would keep growing. Even so, reports from BigGo and Dow Jones tied the stock’s extra decline to the missing number. Shares closed down 6.69% at $464.24 that day and fell to $430.01 by Oct. 15, an eighth straight losing session.
The sector was already sliding. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had dropped for six sessions by Oct. 13, and memory stocks fell hard that day after a report on China’s ChangXin Memory. Lam Research (LRCX), KLA (KLAC) and ASML (ASML) lost 2.6% to 3.5%, about half of Applied’s decline or less.
The 2030 Margin Math Does Not Depend on a WFE Number
The breakfast did deliver targets, laid out in Applied’s investor relations materials: a 54% non-GAAP gross margin and a 40% non-GAAP operating margin by calendar 2030. CFO Brice Hill put the current gross margin at about 50%. TIKR’s fiscal 2026 consensus shows an EBIT margin of around 33%.
Hill then gave the bridge. “We’ll expect to get 4 additional points on the gross margin. And we will expect to achieve 200 to 300 basis points in operating leverage,” he said. He credited AI automation in corporate functions for the second part. The pieces add up: around 33%, plus 4 points, plus 2 to 3 points lands near 40%.
He expects about 100 basis points of gross margin gain a year, though not in a straight line. He also said Applied is raising prices, partly to cover costs such as fuel and rare earths.
Services may be the most overlooked target. Applied Global Services generated $6.385 billion in fiscal 2025, and Applied targets more than $12 billion by calendar 2030. Bernstein’s Stacy Rasgon asked why connected chambers rising from 37,000 to 90,000 only yields mid-teens growth. Hill answered that the installed base grows 5% to 10% a year, and new products supply the rest.

A Cheaper Multiple, a Target Cut and the China Math
Since Jan. 25, 2026, Applied’s NTM normalized EPS estimate has risen 83% to $17.61. Over the same stretch, its forward P/E ratio fell to 24.41x from 33.48x.
China is the clearest reason for caution. Head of Investor Relations Michael Sullivan said Applied could sell into 100% of China’s equipment market in the early 2020s, then 90%, and “closer to 70%” in 2025. Hill said the 2030 share-gain target still assumes growth in restricted Chinese accounts under current trade rules. China supplied $8.529 billion of Applied’s $28.368 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue, about 30%.
Evercore ISI cut its target to $590 from $700 on Oct. 14 and kept an Outperform rating. Cantor Fitzgerald’s C.J. Muse reiterated an $850 target on Oct. 13, about 34% above TIKR’s $632.28 Street mean. TIKR shows 29 Buy, 4 Outperform, and 7 Hold ratings. Fiscal Q3 adjusted EPS of $3.50 beat estimates, but GAAP EPS of $3.17 missed the $3.44 estimate.

The mid case is a scenario, not a forecast. It assumes around 15% annual revenue growth, a net margin near 33% and a slightly shrinking P/E. Applied’s own targets point a little higher: a 40% operating margin taxed at management’s estimated 15% rate leaves about 34%, before interest income.
Management expects leading-edge logic, DRAM and advanced packaging to supply about 75% of equipment spending growth through 2030. The main risk is uneven timing, with Hill flagging supply chain “pinch points that have to be managed.” Margins above 54%, which Cantor considers conservative, are the upside. A spending pause that compresses the multiple before earnings catch up is the downside.
Conclusion
Applied reports fiscal Q4 results on Nov. 12. The Street expects about $10.30 billion in revenue and $4.06 in adjusted EPS, inside guidance of $9.75 billion to $10.75 billion.
Gross margin is the line to watch against management’s 50.4% guide. Meeting it is the first data point on the road to 54%. A miss would weaken the 2030 bridge at its first step.
