What Happened?

Apple (AAPL) closed at a record $343.46 on October 16, the day iPhone Duo preorders slipped into next year within minutes. The Duo demand story has been told. Less noticed in Apple’s investor relations materials and its September launch event is a plan to charge heavy users for more Siri AI. Analysts cannot model that revenue line yet, because Apple has not priced it.

Apple Put a Daily Cap on Siri AI

At the September event, Apple’s Lilian Rincon said users make more than 2.5 billion Siri requests a day. She also said some Apple Intelligence features would carry usage limits because they rely on server models, with more access on most iCloud+ plans.

Apple’s rollout announcement names Siri AI, now in beta, among the features subject to daily limits. Its support page says increased access “will be available for a fee” and ties enhanced access to “the 2027 software releases.” Apple has not given a price. Siri AI is also not yet available on iPhones in the EU, which narrows who could pay.

CEO John Ternus framed the design as a privacy choice: “That’s why Apple Intelligence runs on device whenever it can.” The split also has a cost side. Requests handled on the phone run on hardware the customer already bought. The cap therefore falls on the cloud requests Apple pays to serve, and that is where a fee would apply.

The same event put Siri AI on more devices:

  • AirPods 5 bring it hands-free.
  • Apple Watch’s Live Rewind and Siri Recap “require Siri AI,” according to Apple’s Ron Huang, when they reach beta later this year.

Each device is another place a heavy user can hit the cap. Apple also pitched Apple Upgrade, its 12- or 24-month iPhone lease, and introduced AppleCare One Family at $49.99 a month. Any AI fee would land in Services, which grew 13.5% to $109.2 billion in fiscal 2025 while iPhone revenue grew 4.2%.

Reaching around $485 by September 2030 relies on earnings compounding. Street estimates have revenue rising from $416.2 billion in fiscal 2025 to around $572 billion in fiscal 2028. They have normalized EPS rising from $7.46 to around $10.84 over the same span. A priced Siri AI tier would add to Services on top of that path.

The primary risk is a cap set loosely enough that few users pay, leaving Apple to absorb the server cost.

  • Upside: Apple prices extra access alongside its 2027 software, and Services keeps growing at a double-digit pace.
  • Downside: normalized net margin slips below fiscal 2025’s 26.9%.

Conclusion

On November 2, analysts expect Apple to guide December-quarter revenue toward around $154 billion, about 7% growth, with the Duo’s first sales inside it. Guidance below that would show higher prices are not making up for fewer units. A price or launch date for extra Siri AI access would be the first number attached to the plan.
