What Happened?

Alibaba (BABA) stock dropped as much as 10% in Hong Kong trading on Monday after the company priced a massive $10.2 billion share sale.

Alibaba is issuing 710 million new shares at HK$112.70 each, a noticeable discount to Friday’s closing price of HK$123. By the end of the session, Alibaba stock was down 8.4%, trading near the new offer price.

The shares are being sold to non-U.S. investors, and the deal is expected to close Wednesday. Alibaba said every dollar raised will go toward its AI ambitions, specifically building out and upgrading its AI infrastructure.

The timing stands out. This share placement comes just days after Alibaba reported a 75% drop in quarterly profit for the June quarter, largely because of how much the company is spending on AI. Capital expenditure alone jumped 75% year over year to 67.7 billion yuan.

So investors are now watching Alibaba raise even more money, on top of already-heavy spending, and reacting by selling.

The pressure wasn’t limited to Hong Kong either. Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares fell 3.4% in premarket trading, showing the selloff carried across markets.

Not everyone sees this as a bad sign, though. Vey-Sern Ling, senior equity advisor at UBP, said last week that Alibaba is well positioned to chase AI growth, pointing to its cloud computing business and strong AI models.

He did note that profits could stay weak in the near term while capital spending keeps climbing.

This fits a pattern.

Alibaba previously committed to spending at least 380 billion yuan on cloud and AI infrastructure over three years.

And it’s not alone. Tencent, one of Alibaba’s biggest Chinese tech rivals, also ramped up spending, with capital expenditure rising 65% from the prior quarter to 52.8 billion yuan in the same period.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Alibaba Stock

The sharp drop in Alibaba stock tells you investors are uneasy about dilution and the pace of AI spending, even if the long-term strategy makes sense.

Selling new shares at a discount means existing shareholders own a smaller slice of the company, and that’s rarely welcomed.

At the same time, the bigger picture hasn’t changed.

Alibaba is doubling down on AI just like its peers across China’s tech sector. Whether that pays off will depend on how quickly the AI investments start generating returns.

For now, Alibaba stock is absorbing the short-term pain of funding a long-term bet.
