What Happened?
Nucor stock (NUE) jumped on Monday, pushing shares back up to $245. The move comes after a rough stretch for the steelmaker.
Shares fell sharply from their 52-week high of $280.11 after reports surfaced on August 19 of a tentative U.S.-Canada deal that would have cut tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 25%.
That news spooked investors, since lower tariffs would mean more competition from Canadian steel. Nucor stock slid into the mid-$240s as traders priced in the risk.
Now that those trade talks appear to have collapsed, the threat of cheaper Canadian steel flooding the U.S. market has faded, at least for now. Buyers are stepping back in, and Nucor stock is finding support near its recent lows.
The rally also has real earnings behind it. Nucor posted Q2 2026 net income of $1.16 billion, or $5.04 per share, up sharply from $2.60 per share a year ago.
Management also said it expects earnings to improve further in Q3, giving investors a reason to stay optimistic even with trade policy still up in the air.

Analysts remain largely bullish on Nucor stock, with price targets sitting comfortably above where shares trade today.
The broader backdrop still favors domestic steelmakers too. U.S. steel imports are running about 30% below last year’s levels, largely thanks to Section 232 tariffs.
Fewer imports mean less competition and stronger pricing power for producers like Nucor.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Nucor Stock
The rest of the market offered little tailwind today. The S&P 500 was slightly lower, and the Nasdaq was down too. That tells you this move is about steel, not the broader market.
In other words, Nucor stock is rallying because of what’s happening in its own industry, not because of a market-wide rally.
Investors seem to be betting that with the U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsing, the tariff protections that have helped domestic steel prices stay strong will remain in place.

There’s still risk here.
If tariff talks between the U.S. and Canada eventually resume and lead to a deal, that could pressure domestic steel pricing down the road.
But for now, strong earnings, shrinking imports, and this pullback in the stock look like they’re giving investors a reason to buy the dip in Nucor stock.
