What Happened?

Akamai Technologies (AKAM) stock jumped nearly 9% in pre-market trading after the company beat Wall Street on both earnings and revenue for Q2.

Adjusted earnings came in at $1.59 per share, just ahead of the $1.58 analysts expected, while revenue reached $1.1 billion, above the $1.09 billion forecast and up 5% from a year ago.

The bigger story was a new four-year contract worth more than $600 million with a U.S. technology company that will use Akamai’s cloud infrastructure for robotics development. CEO Tom Leighton called it proof that Akamai is becoming a key infrastructure provider for the AI-driven economy.

Segment results backed up that narrative. Cloud Infrastructure Services revenue grew 39% year-over-year to $99 million, and security revenue rose 10% to $604 million. Both helped offset a 6% decline in the company’s legacy delivery business.

Looking ahead, management said it expects cloud infrastructure revenue to accelerate meaningfully in Q4. The company also pointed to overall revenue growth moving from single digits this year into the low teens in 2027.

Guidance for the next quarter came in a bit more mixed.

Akamai guided Q3 revenue to a range of $1.11 billion to $1.13 billion and full-year EPS to $6.40 to $7.05, with both midpoints slightly below what analysts were expecting.

That initially tempered the after-hours reaction, but pre-market enthusiasm took over as investors focused on the bigger picture.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Akamai Technologies Stock

The size of the rally in Akamai Technologies stock shows investors care more about the AI infrastructure story than one quarter’s guidance numbers. The $600 million robotics deal stood out as the clearest signal yet that Akamai’s push into AI-related cloud services is landing real, large-scale customers.

The broader market gave only mild support Wednesday, with the Nasdaq up 0.5% and the S&P 500 up 0.2%. That’s nowhere near enough to explain a near 14% move, which means the rally in Akamai Technologies stock was almost entirely driven by the company’s own results and outlook.

AKAM Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

Akamai had been trading well below its 52-week high of $165.45 heading into earnings, after recovering from a 52-week low of $69.78. That left shares with plenty of room to run once the AI infrastructure narrative kicked in. Analysts at Oppenheimer and Evercore ISI, who already had bullish ratings on the stock, appear to be getting validated by both the earnings beat and the pace at which Akamai’s cloud infrastructure business is scaling.

With Cloud Infrastructure Services growing nearly 40% and management pointing to accelerating growth into 2027, the market seems to be re-rating Akamai Technologies stock as more than just a legacy content delivery company.
